A：從文法觀點來看，a.m. 為拉丁文 ante meridiem (= before noon，意為「上午」) 的縮寫，不是 Ante Meridiem 的縮寫，所以應該用小寫才對；同樣地，p.m. 為拉丁文 post meridiem (= after noon，意為「下午；午後」) 的縮寫，不是 Post Meridiem 的縮寫，所以應該用小寫才對。它們均用於時間數字之後。然而，相信幾乎所有人都見過這兩種寫法，亦即大小寫都有人用。
a.m. 亦可寫成 am，而 p.m. 也可寫成 pm。根據筆者參閱幾本著名的英文文體指南和手冊，美式英語都使用 a.m. 和 p.m.，而英式英語則大多採用 am 和 pm、甚至 AM 和 PM 的寫法。顯然地，無論大寫或小寫，都是可以接受的寫法或用法。
不過，有一項與 a.m. 或 p.m. 有關的用法經常發生 redundant 或 wordy 的情況，必須注意，無則嘉勉，有則改之。請看下面的例句：
- The store will open at 8:30 a.m. this morning. (這家商店將在今天上午八點半開門營業)
- The library will close at 10:00 p.m. tonight. (這座圖書館將在今晚十時關門)
上面這兩個句子都有贅字，不符言簡意賅的原則。在第 1 句，a.m. (= before noon) 與 this morning 同義，只能擇一使用，除非上午有兩個八點半；在第 2 句，p.m. (= after noon) 與 tonight 或 this evening 的意思相當，也只能擇一使用，除非午後有兩個十點。所以，這兩句必須修改如下才符合簡潔的要求：
- The store will open at 8:30 a.m. 或
- The store will open at 8:30 a.m. today. 或
- The store will open at 8:30 this morning.
- The library will close at 10:00 p.m. 或
- The library will close at 10:00 tonight. 或
- The library will close at 10:00 this evening.
