Keep one’s eyes peeled/skinned

Keep one’s eyes peeled (for someone or something) Keep your eyes peeled/open for Amy. (你要留意艾美);Keep your eyes peeled/open for a gas station. (注意看一下有沒有加油站);The thieves kept their eyes peeled/open for the police.

Keep your eyes skinned/open for a petrol station.,但全世界使用 keep one’s eyes peeled 的頻率高於 keep one’s eyes skinned。

Have a thing for/about

To have a thing for (someone) I had a thing for one of my colleagues for a while, but I decided not to pursue it for the sake of our work. (我曾喜歡一個同事,但為了我們的工作,我決定不追他/她了);I hear that Teresa has a thing for Benjamin.

To have a thing about (someone or something) I’ve got a thing about blondes. (我特別喜歡金髮美女);I’ve got a thing about spiders – I won’t touch them. (我非常討厭蜘蛛 - 連碰都不會碰);I have a thing about Kelly. I guess I’m in love. 我想我戀愛了);Maggie has a thing about Jim. She simply hates him.

Peter’s got a thing about/for Vicky’s sister. He wants to ask her out.

Wet behind the ears

Wet behind the ears 不過,英國小說家 Edward Bulwer-Lytton 在其 1872 年出版的小說《巴黎人》(The Parisians) 一書中已使用了用字略有不同但同義的 “not yet dry behind the ears”。

Wet behind the ears 當形容詞用,其前經常使用 still 來修飾。 有趣的是,dry back of the ears 此一成語早已杳如黃鶴,不復存在,但 wet behind the ears 迄今仍是個相當流行、經常耳聞的口語 - 有時亦說成或寫成 not dry behind the ears 或 hardly dry behind the ears。

Thingamabob, thingamajig, thingummy, thingy

whatchamacallit - KK [ˈhwɑtʃəmə͵kɔlɪt] / DJ [ˈwɔtʃəmə͵kɔ:lit]
thingamabob - KK [ˈθɪŋəmə͵bɑb] / DJ [ˈθiŋəməbɔb]
thingamajig - KK [ˈθɪŋəmə͵dʒɪg] / DJ [ˈθiŋəmədʒig]
thingummy - IPA [ˈθɪŋəmi]

例句:

  • You’ve broken the whatchamacallit on my computer.
  • Is thingamabob coming tomorrow?
  • I have one of those thingamajigs on my desk, too.
  • I need one of those green thingummies over there.

Hit the hay, hit the sack

美國作家喬治‧艾德 (George Ade) 1902 年在其《People You Know》一書中就寫過 “He crawled into the hay at 9.30 P.M.” 雖然 to hit the hay 至少在 1900 年代初期就已存在,但 to hit the sack 直到大約 1940 年才出現。

例句:

  • Time to go home and hit the hay!
  • I have to go home and hit the hay pretty soon.
  • Let’s hit the sack. We have to get an early start in the morning.
  • I’ve got a busy day tomorrow, so I think it’s time to hit the sack.

Another think coming

Think 是大家所熟悉且每天使用的動詞,但它亦可當名詞用,意為「想」,不過只用在兩個慣用的口語中,一是 to have a think (about something),另一是 to have (got) another think coming。To have a think (about something) I want to have a think about the engagement. (我想仔細考慮訂婚的事);I’ll have to have a think about this before I give you a definite answer.

To have (got) another think coming 根據《牛津英語大辭典》(The Oxford English Dictionary, OED),這成語僅跟 “If you think/he thinks (that) …

Cat got your tongue?

Cat got your tongue? Cat got your tongue? 的原句為 “Has the cat got your tongue?”。

  • What’s wrong Mr. Chen, cat got your tongue?
  • What’s the matter, cat got your tongue?
  • What happened? Has the cat got your tongue?

A whole nother

That was a whole ‘nother matter. 然而,這在邏輯上相當於該寫作者是在表示 a whole another,這比 a whole nother 更無意義。 He’s from a whole other world.

The grizzly swallowed the salmon whole. (那隻灰熊把那條鮭魚整個吞了下去);E-commerce is a whole new way of doing business.

Keep it on the D/L

Do you know how to D/L the software?

這個片語在此意為 secrecy (秘密;保密),所以 keep it on the D/L 或 keep it on the down low 就是 keep it a secret (保守秘密),如 I lost the 2,000 NT dollars from the cash register but keep it on the D/L or I’ll get fired. (我弄丟了收銀機的 2 千元,但我保守秘密,否則會被炒魷魚);Alright, I’ll tell you but please keep this on the down low, just between you and me.

Keep it on the D/L 是個用得頗為頻繁的口語,唸成「keep it on the D/L」(DL 用字母發音) 或「keep it on the down low」。 這個片語現今還有此意,但 keep it on the D/L 或 keep it on the down low 則只有「保守秘密」的意思。
