Insidious vs. invidious

High blood pressure is an insidious condition which has few symptoms.

He was in the invidious position of having to sack her. Such choices/decisions are invidious.

Persecute vs. prosecute

The cult persecutes those who do not conform to their religious belief. (那個邪教迫害那些不信奉其宗教信仰的人);His latest novel is about the experience of being persecuted for being gay. (他最新的小說是以同性戀者受迫害的經歷為題材);The actress has been persecuted by the tabloid newspapers ever since the news broke about her divorce.

The dissidents had to go abroad to escape political persecution. (異議人士不得不前往海外以逃避政治迫害);The country’s underprivileged people rose up against their persecutors.

Perspective vs. prospective

His attitude lends a fresh perspective to the issue. (他的態度為這個問題提供了新的視角);Her father always sees things from a religious perspective.

由 perspective 所構成的片語 “get/keep sth in perspective” 時有所聞。 We must keep things in perspective – the overall situation isn’t really that bad.

Perquisite vs. prerequisite vs. requisite

One perquisite of his new post was a reserved parking place. Perquisite 後面通常接介系詞 of,如 the perquisites of her new job (她的新工作的額外津貼)。

What perks does this job give you?

A reasonable proficiency in English is a prerequisite of/for joining this advanced course. The prerequisite forms must be filed at least a week before the interview.

Espresso vs. expresso

Be careful not to overrate your competitors.

Perpetrate vs. perpetuate

The military perpetrated many human rights abuses during the earliest phase of the conflict.

It’s time the perpetrators of the crime were brought to justice.

Dissemble vs. disassemble

He tried to dissemble his disappointment with a joke. (他企圖以玩笑來掩飾其失望);She dissembled her feelings of fear so well that no one suspected how frightened she was.

The only way to fool his captors was to dissemble, to pretend to be cowed.

The child disassembled the alarm clock in record time.

Meretricious vs. meritorious

His arguments seemed attractive at first, but they proved to be meretricious through and through. (他的論據起初似乎滿吸引人的,但最後證明全然華而不實);A lot of journalism in Taiwan is meretricious and superficial.
