To pop the question 意為「求婚」(to propose marriage)，其中 pop 這個及物動詞意為「啪的一聲拉開；迅速地打開」，過去式和過去分詞都是 popped，而現在分詞為 popping。吾人實在很難從字面猜得到這個慣用語真正的意思。傳統上，求婚者都是男性，但時移勢易，現在女性也可能是求婚者，甚至同性戀者亦可能向他或她的伴侶求婚。
To pop the question 於 1700 年代初期開始使用，當時的意思是「問重要的問題」，當然這些問題也可能包括問對方願不願意嫁給他，或者其他任何重要的問題。到了 1820 年代，這個慣用語變成僅意為求婚。
