A：根據英文文法規則，無生命名詞的所有格大多使用 of 結構，如 The collar of the shirt is dirty. (這件襯衫的領子髒了)，所以 The shirt’s collar is dirty. 是錯的；而有生命名詞 (包括人和動物) 的所有格則可使用 of 結構或 ‘s (apostrophe-s)，如 John’s collar is dirty./The collar of John is dirty. (約翰的衣領髒了) 或 The dog’s collar is dirty./The collar of the dog is dirty. (狗的頸圈髒了)。不過，就有生命名詞而言，我們通常使用 ‘s 而比較少用 of 結構。
雖然無生命名詞的所有格大多使用 of 結構，但許多無生命名詞就跟有生命名詞一樣可使用 of 結構或 ‘s。它們可分成下列四類，前三類的界定明確，第四類的界定則比較鬆散難以掌握：
- 第一類：地名 (亦即專有名詞)：Africa’s modernization (非洲的現代化)，England’s industrialization (英格蘭的工業化)，Taiwan’s history (台灣的歷史；台灣史)，Taipei’s problems (台北的問題)。
- 第二類：地方場所的名詞 (亦即表示地方場所的普通名詞)：the earth’s center (地球中心)，the nation’s debts (國債)，the city’s recreation areas (這城市的娛樂區)，the world’s problems (世界的問題)，the moon’s surface (月球表面)。
- 第三類：時間/距離/價值/重量名詞：a year’s wait (一年的等待)，the week’s proceeds (本週的收入)，today’s young people (今日的年輕人)，a day’s work (一天的工作)，this evening’s storm (今晚的暴風雨)，5 days’ leave (五天的休假)，3 years’ salary (三年的薪水)。a cable’s length (電纜的長度)，two hours’ walk/flight/drive (兩小時的步行或路程/飛行/車程)，a dollar’s worth (of apples) (價值一元的蘋果)，two tons’ weight (兩噸重)。
- 第四類包含許多不同的名詞，它們似乎只有一項共通點，那就是它們都是表示與人類事物有密切關係的概念：at arm’s length (保持一定的距離)，the story’s main theme (故事的主題)，the car’s engine (汽車引擎)，the car’s history (汽車史)，the ship’s captain (船長)，the wine’s quality (這葡萄酒的品質)，the book’s importance (這本書的重要性)，the machine’s function (這部機器的功能)，the brain’s function (腦部的功能)，a word’s structure (字的結構)，science’s influence (科學的影響)，the treaty’s signing (條約的簽署)。由於這一類包含許多各式各樣的名詞，因此有關無生命名詞何時可以使用 ‘s 所有格形式的問題相當棘手，只能仰賴平時多看多讀來累積經驗，以免用時方恨少或使用錯誤。
最後值得一提的是，許多本身不允許使用 ‘s 的無生命名詞，若以 it 來代替就可以了，亦即使用 it 的所有格 its。例如：
- The assumption is unjustified, but its basis is very clear. (這項假設不合理，但它的基礎很清楚)
－ 不宜使用 The assumption’s basis is very clear.
不過，如果把上例中的 basis 改為 reason，那麼我們只能乖乖地使用 the reason of the assumption，而不能使用 its reason，因為 its reason 是等於 the reason for it 而不是 the reason of it － 上例中的 its basis = the basis of it。
