Suggest

  • John suggested an inexpensive restaurant near the school for the party.
  • He suggests a little walk.

  • Phil suggested going in his car.
Phil suggested to go in his car.
Phil suggested our going in his car.
  • I suggest going to the library on Sunday.
I suggest to go to the library on Sunday.
I suggest our going to the library on Sunday.
  • I suggested putting the matter to the school.
I suggested to put the matter to the school.
  • If there is a mechanical problem, I suggest contacting the manufacturer directly.
If there is a mechanical problem, I suggest to contact the manufacturer directly.

  • If this happened to your daughter, what would you suggest her?
If this happened to your daughter, what would you suggest to her? (正)
  • The specialist suggests parents that they should adopt a different way of bringing up their children.
The specialist suggests to parents that they should adopt a different way of bringing up their children.

  • I suggest having dinner first and then watching the film.
  • I suggest (that) we have dinner first, and then watch the film.
  • I suggest going there around five o’clock. They usually go for a jog at six o’clock.
  • I suggest (that) you go there around five o’clock. They usually go for a jog at six o’clock.

  • The company suggested that she (should) resign.
The company suggested that she resigned.
  • He suggested that we (should) accept these gifts.
He suggested that we accepted these gifts.
  • Mary suggested that John be present.
Mary suggested that John was present.
  • Helen suggested (that) I should try the shop on Nanjing East Road.
Helen suggested (that) I tried the shop on Nanjing East Road.

所以,若要表達「建議做某事」的意思,就用 suggest + 動名詞;若要表達「建議某人做某事」的意思,則用 suggest + that 子句,亦即 suggest (that) somebody (should) do something,但千萬不可使用 suggest somebody to do something (上面已說過,suggest 不可接間接受詞當受詞!)。例如:

  • The company suggested her to resign.
  • He suggested us to accept these gifts.
  • Mary suggested John to be present.
  • Helen suggested me to try the shop on Nanjing East Road.

  • Can anyone suggest what we should do to improve computer performances?
  • Can anyone suggest how we might attract more customers?
  • Could you suggest where I might be able to buy a high-end engagement ring?

One Comment

I suggest (that) we have dinner first, and then watch the film.

I suggest (that) you go there around five o’clock. They usually go for a jog at six o’clock.

the doctor suggests he quit smoking.
=the doctor suggests he should quit smoking.
