Tasteful, tasteless, tasty, distasteful (adjs.)

Her comments were very tasteful. (她的評論很有品味);The study had tasteful furnishings. (書房的室內陳設高雅優美);tasteful decoration (雅致的裝飾)。

This really was a tasty meal. (這真是美味的一餐);She served a wonderfully tasty lunch. (她供應了非常美味可口的午餐);a few tasty snack (一些可口的小吃)。 John’s new girlfriend is very tasty. (約翰的新女友很迷人);His sister’s rather tasty.

His room is full of tasteless ornaments. (他的房間盡是沒有品味的裝飾品);She thought his comments rude and tasteless. (她認為他的評論粗魯不雅);a tasteless remark/joke (不雅的話/笑話)。 (學生餐廳供應淡而無味的冷披薩);a tasteless piece of chicken (一塊淡而無味的雞肉);tasteless vegetables/soup (沒有味道的蔬菜/湯)。

Many people have complained that they found the pictures distasteful. (許多人抱怨這些圖片令人反感);a rather distasteful duty (相當令人討厭的職責);a distasteful joke (令人倒胃口的笑話)。

Beneficent, beneficial, benevolent, benign (adjs.)

He was beneficent to the poor. His beneficence was well known.

The fall in prices will be beneficial to small businesses. (價格下滑將有利於小型企業);One or two glasses of wine a day can be beneficial.

The institution received a donation from a benevolent well-wisher. (這機構接受了一名樂善好施的支持者的捐款);The institution received a benevolent donation. (這機構接受了一筆慈善捐款);a benevolent smile (和藹的/和善的微笑)。 He did it out of pure benevolence. (她凝視的目光含有惡意);a malevolent look/smile (不懷好意的表情/微笑)。

She smiled a benign smile. (她露出和藹的/慈祥的微笑);a benign old woman (慈祥的老婦人);a benign tumor (良性腫瘤)。 A cancer is a malignant growth. (癌是一種惡性腫瘤);a malignant tumor (惡性腫瘤)。

Fallible, fallacious (adjs.)

fallible 意為「難免犯錯的;可能會出錯的;不完善的;不完美的」(likely to make mistakes or be wrong; imperfect),如 All human beings are fallible. (犯錯乃人之常情);fallible legal system (不完善的司法制度)。

Fallacious 意為「謬誤的」(mistaken; containing a fallacy or an error),如 That was a fallacious argument. (那是謬誤的論點);Your reasoning is obviously fallacious.

Q:”You have spelt it wrong.”

He has been wrongly accused. (他被誣告);You guessed wrong. You have spelt it wrong.

Wrong/wrongly 的反義詞 right/rightly 的用法亦同,如 I am rightly informed. (我得到正確的消息);Did I do it right? He was driving his mum’s car, if I remember right/rightly. 此外,rightly or wrongly (對或不對) 這個片語不可寫成 right or wrong,而且前後順序也不能對調,亦即不能寫成 wrongly or rightly:He believed, rightly or wrongly, that she was guilty. 再者,由 wrong (副詞) 所構成的幾個片語都相當常用,如 get someone wrong (誤會、誤解某人):Don’t get me wrong, there’s no offence meant. (別誤會,我沒有冒犯之意);go wrong (出錯,搞錯,弄錯;走錯方向;不對勁):I didn’t know where I went wrong.

Effective, effectual, efficacious, efficient (adjs.)

The talks were very effective in settling the dispute. (這些會談在解決糾紛上卓有成效);an effective treatment for hair loss (治療脫髮的一種有效方法);The law is effective as from today. (這項法律今天開始生效);an effective performance/performer (令人印象深刻的表演/表演者);an effective speech/speaker (有力的演說/演說者);He has become an effective leader (他已成為實質領導人);Only half our troops are trained and effective.

All plans to reduce the trade deficit have not so far proved effectual. (截至目前,所有降低貿易赤字的計畫均證明無效);effectual measures to combat unemployment (對付失業的有效措施)。

(有效率的機器/制度);an efficient secretary (有效率或稱職的秘書)。它的反義詞 inefficient 和名詞 efficiency 都相當常用,尤其是名詞:an inefficient cook (不稱職的廚師);It would improve our efficiency if we used more up-to-date methods.

Exceptionable, exceptional, unexceptionable, unexceptional (adjs.)

I took the greatest exception to his rude remarks. That play is quite suitable for children to see; there’s nothing exceptionable in it.

(他們是優秀的學生);The firemen showed exceptional bravery.

A judge’s ethical standards should be unexceptionable. (法官的道德標準應是無懈可擊的);unexceptionable behavior (無可非議的行為)。 The hotel was comfortable but unexceptional. (這家旅館雖舒適但很普通);Unfortunately some judges’ ethical standards have been unexceptional.

Partially, partly (advs.)

The stream was partly polluted. The stream was partially polluted.

Partially 意指「不完全地」(not completely; to a limited degree/extent),是 completely 的反義詞,而 partly 意指「僅涉及一部份,並非全部;有幾分」(not wholly; to some degree/extent),是 wholly 的反義詞。 His book, which was written partly in English and partly in French, was only partially completed when he died.

He is partially responsible for the accident. (他對該事故負有部分責任);Her father is partially sighted. (她的父親弱視);The airline is partially owned by British Airways.

  1. Inflation has remained low, partly as a result of cheaper imports.
  2. I’ll admit I was partly to blame.
  3. She was shaking all over, partly because she was so angry with John and partly because she was so afraid.

Flammable, incombustible, inflammable, noncombustible, nonflammable (adjs.)

Petrol is highly (in)flammable. Clothes shouldn’t be made of (in)flammable material.

The situation is highly inflammable.

Consequent, consequential (adj.)

Competition in the market has led to goods being produced cheaply and a consequent deterioration in quality. (市場的競爭已導致商品的廉價生產,隨之品質也下降了);She was knocked down by a truck and her consequent injuries left her a permanent invalid. (她被卡車撞倒,而因此造成的傷害使她終生殘廢);consequential loss/damage (間接損失/損害)。

The rise in price was consequent on/to the failure of the crops. (物價上漲是由收成不好所引起的);Severe flooding was consequent on/to the heavy rains. They’ve increased the number of staff and consequently the service is better.

Consequential 除了上述意思外,也意為「重要的,意義重大的」(important, significant),可以指事物也可指人,其反義詞為 inconsequential,意為「不重要的;無足輕重的;微不足道的」(unimportant, insignificant):He made a consequential decision. (他作了一項意義重大的決定);an inconsequential event (無關緊要的事件);an inconsequential detail (微不足道的細節)。 He is a consequential little man.

Practicable, practical, impracticable, impractical (adjs.)

Is it practicable to try to develop agriculture in desert regions? (在沙漠地區發展農業行得通嗎?);He lacks practical experience. (他缺乏實際/實務經驗);Your invention is very practical. (你的發明很實用);She was a simple, practical, hardworking woman. (她是個簡樸、務實和勤奮的女性);He gave practical advice.

His new plan seems practicable [practical]. It may be practicable to create jobs for everyone but this would not be a practical solution to the problems of unemployment.

The idea sounds great, but I’m afraid it’s impracticable. (這個構想聽起來很棒,但恐怕行不通);His new plan is impracticable. (他的新計畫行不通);His new plan is impractical. (他的新計畫不切實際);clothes that are attractive but entirely impractical (漂亮卻一點也不實用的衣服);The mathematician is an impractical person who can’t even boil an egg.
