英文:all present and accounted for (美);all present and correct (英) (phr.)

  • Is everyone ready to run the marathon? All present and accounted for.
  • Are all students here? Nearly all present and correct.

A whole nother

That was a whole ‘nother matter. 然而,這在邏輯上相當於該寫作者是在表示 a whole another,這比 a whole nother 更無意義。 He’s from a whole other world.

The grizzly swallowed the salmon whole. (那隻灰熊把那條鮭魚整個吞了下去);E-commerce is a whole new way of doing business.

英文:have a heart (v.)

  • Have a heart! I can’t pay you back until three months later.
  • Have a heart! Don’t be always borrowing money from me.
  • Have a heart! Don’t call me at midnight.

Keep it on the D/L

Do you know how to D/L the software?

這個片語在此意為 secrecy (秘密;保密),所以 keep it on the D/L 或 keep it on the down low 就是 keep it a secret (保守秘密),如 I lost the 2,000 NT dollars from the cash register but keep it on the D/L or I’ll get fired. (我弄丟了收銀機的 2 千元,但我保守秘密,否則會被炒魷魚);Alright, I’ll tell you but please keep this on the down low, just between you and me.

Keep it on the D/L 是個用得頗為頻繁的口語,唸成「keep it on the D/L」(DL 用字母發音) 或「keep it on the down low」。 這個片語現今還有此意,但 keep it on the D/L 或 keep it on the down low 則只有「保守秘密」的意思。

He just looks so put together

Tom helped me put the computer together yesterday. (湯姆昨天幫我組裝電腦);I put together the desk I bought at Ikea. (我組裝了在 Ikea 購買的書桌);A team of professionals have been put together to solve the thorny problem.

He just looks so put together. John is just so put together. What a handsome man!

The actress looks so put together and fashionable. (那位女星看起來好美好時髦哦!);Mary is just so put together. What a beautiful woman!

Coulda, shoulda, woulda, dunno, gonna … wanna

Coulda (= could have:原本可以)

  • Justin coulda gone to your birthday party but he had to go to Taipei to sign an important contract.

Shoulda (= should have:原本應該)

  • You shoulda helped him but you just sat on your hands.

Woulda (= would have:原本會;原本想要)

  • I woulda said yes to lending my new car to Jack but my wife woulda killed me!

Dunno (= don’t know:不知道)

  • “How long has Professor Smith been living here in Taipei?”
    “I dunno, maybe over 10 years.”

Gonna (= going to:會,將)

  • This kind of problem isn’t gonna get easy solution.

Gotta (= have/has got to:必須,要,得)

  • I gotta go now.

Hafta (= have to:必須,要,得)

  • We don’t hafta let John know the secret of where his ex lives.

  • I kinda hate my new colleague Teresa because she looks prettier than me.

Outta (= out of:沒了;走了)

  • We’re outta cigarettes. You go get them!
  • This activity’s kinda boring. I gotta get outta here.

  • That new guy in our office is sorta arrogant.

Wanna (= want to:想要)

  • I wanna go see a dentist tomorrow.

Dialectal vs. dialectical

There is a big difference between slang and dialectal colloquialisms.

Her husband’s idea and hers are dialectical/dialectic.

The word has three meanings, one of which is a dialectical sense.

Vacay, whatev

John: Can I go on vacay with you tomorrow? Mary: Whatev.。

  • Teresa’s going on vacay with her family on the weekend.
  • They’re going on vacay abroad this summer.
  • Can I go on a vacay to North Korea?

  • Sam: Jack says he really loves you very much.
    Cindy: Whatev.
  • A:Do you want me to share this with you?
    B: Whatev!

  • John: Can I go on vacay with you tomorrow?
    Mary: Whatev.

英文:be over it (phr.)

  • I suffered for days after Hilary broke up with me, but I’m over it now.
  • A: “Sorry about standing you up last night” (抱歉,昨晚放你鴿子)
    B: “Whatever, I’m over it.”
  • Amy was so heartbroken when her parents split up, but she said she would get over it.
