E.g. 是拉丁文 exempli gratia (= for example) 的縮寫，意為「例如；譬如說」，而 i.e. 是拉丁文 id est (= that is, in other words) 的縮寫，意為「亦即；換言之」。由於它們都是用來引導補充資料來解釋或說明前面提到的事物，這兩個常用的縮寫字經常被搞混。
