  • Money in not everything but nothing can be done without money.
  • I like to drink coffee without sugar.

  • Henry left us without a word.
Henry left us without word.
  • He can do mathematics without a calculator.
He can do mathematics without calculator.
  • Don’t go out without an umbrella. It’s raining cats and dogs.
Don’t go out without umbrella. It’s raining cats and dogs.

Nobody but my sisters wants to stay in now.

  • Nobody but my sisters wants to stay in now.
  • Nobody but my sisters want to stay in now.
  • Nobody but my sisters wanted to stay in now.

Impending vs. pending

Impending 意為「(通常指不愉快或具有威脅性的事情或情勢) 即將發生的,逼近的」,但這個形容詞僅能用在名詞之前,如 the impending elections (即將到來的選舉);impending doom (行將毀滅);the impending exams (即將舉行的考試);They were unaware of the impending disaster. (他們未察覺到大難臨頭);The dark clouds suggest an impending storm.

Pending 主要意為「懸而未決的;未定的;待完成的」,但這個形容詞也有「即將發生的,逼近的」意思,如 the pending case (懸案);the pending agreement (懸而未決的協議);The murder case has been pending for nearly 10 years. (這一殺人案已懸而未決近 10 年);the pending economic union of ASEAN member states (東協會員國即將達成的經濟聯盟);The results of the investigation were pending.

Pending our boss’s return from Japan, let us get everything ready. (讓我們在老闆從日本回來之前把一切準備就緒);Allen delayed his decision pending his father’s return. (艾倫等到他父親回來之後才做出決定);The criminals were held in custody pending trial.

Answer, reply (vv.)

I sent in my job application letter and the company replied at once.

Amy’s waiting for an answer to her letter. (艾美正在等候回信);We’re still waiting for them to answer. (我們還在等他們答覆);I said good night to my daughter but she gave no answer.

A bag of potatoes was discovered in his car.

  • A bag of potatoes was discovered in his car.
  • A bag of potatoes were discovered in his car.

除 a bag of 外,a box of, a pack of 等片語的用法亦同。

  • That is a situation Ted has not thought of.
  • Mary is a person her husband cannot cope with.
  • It is behavior anyone will not put up with.

Fact, truth (nn.)

(事實勝於雄辯);The soap opera is based on historical fact. The teacher told us a lot of interesting facts about baseball. (老師告訴我們許多有關棒球的有趣事實);Let’s just stick to the facts and not jump to any conclusions.

It is universal truth that holds true for the whole world. (這是一項放諸四海皆準的普遍真理;Truth lies at the bottom of a well. (真理不易被發現);There’s not any truth in these rumors. (這些謠傳沒有任何真實性);Only after several months of investigating did the police finally get to the truth.

I didn’t go out because of the fact that it was raining.

Marry in haste, repent at leisure

One way to get rich is to marry money.

He borrowed a lot of money from the bank.

Into, onto, up to

有些人分不清楚 into 和 in to 的用法差異。 當一個動詞與 in 所構成的片語動詞 (phrasal verb) 後接 to 時,in 和 to 要分開,如 hand in to, step in to, turn in to,因為這個 to 可能是不定詞,也可能是介系詞,但不管是不定詞還是介系詞,in 恆為副詞,而 into 和 onto 一定是介系詞。例如:

  • John decided to hand the purse in to see if there was a reward.
  • John decided to hand the purse in to the police.
