Empathy, sympathy (nn.)

His mother is a doctor who has great empathy with her patients.

As a father I empathize with John’s experience.

We all have great sympathy for the families of the victims in the fatal gas explosions in Kaohsiung.

Have/feel sympathy for (somebody) Chloe has no sympathy for beggars. Monica will definitely have no sympathy with your stupid ideas. 此外,be in/be out of sympathy with (something) 亦是頗為常用的片語,意為「贊成,支持 (某事) / 不贊成,不支持 (某事)」,如 Most people are in sympathy with my views.

We all sympathize deeply with the families of the victims in the fatal gas explosions in Kaohsiung. (我們所有人都非常同情高雄致命性氣爆的罹難者的家屬);Most people sympathize with my views.

Due to 還是 because of 呢?

當句子的主動詞為 am, is, are, was, were 等 BE 動詞時,我們要用 due to,此時 due to 可以用 caused by 來替換。例如:

  • The serious accident was due to his careless driving.
= The serious accident was caused by his careless driving.
The serious accident was because of his careless driving.
  • Mary’s coming to class late was due to the rain.
= Mary’s coming to class late was caused by the rain.
Mary’s coming to class late was because of the rain.

當句子的主動詞為 BE 動詞以外的其他動詞,即普通動詞時,我們要用 because of,此時 because of 可以用 on account of 或 in view of 來替換。例如:

  • Robert cannot go to work because of sickness.
= Robert cannot go to work on account of sickness.
Robert cannot go to work due to sickness.
  • The prices are rising because of the government’s inability to control inflation.
= The prices are rising in view of the government’s inability to control inflation.
The prices are rising due to the government’s inability to control inflation.

非也!Owing to 的用法跟 because of 完全一樣。例如:

  • Poverty is due to laziness.
Poverty is owing to laziness.
  • Because of the weather, we will cancel anniversary celebrations.
= Owing to the weather, we will cancel anniversary celebrations. (正)

Taller than I 還是 Taller than me 呢?

Tom is taller than me Tom is taller than I 的說法顯得做作。 Tom is taller than I am.。

  • Tom is taller than I am.
  • Tom is taller than I. (正) - 只是比較簡潔。

  • Tom is taller than me.

  • Tom likes John more than me.

  • Tom prefers John to me.

  • Tom likes John more than I like John.

  • Tom likes John more than he likes me.
  • Tom likes John more than I do. 或
  • Tom likes John more than I like John.

然而,當 than 後面接代名詞 who 時,than 必須用作介系詞,所以 who 要變成 whom;簡言之,”than whom” 是唯一正確的版本。例如:

  • Blanche likes you more than who?
  • Blanche likes you more than whom?

You and I or you and me

不少人經常在 you and I 或 my husband and I 等應該用 me 的情況中使用 I,簡單的文法卻犯了大錯,令人遺憾!

  • It is a gift from my husband and me.
  • It is a gift from my husband and I. (誤) - 這跟說 from I 一樣是錯誤的。
  • Between you and I, I think his wife is rather ugly.

Between you and me = between ourselves = between you, me, and the gatepost/bedpost

記住,介系詞 (from, between, by, for, in, at, on …) 這與 I 的前面是否有 you 或 my husband 無關。

只有 you and I 或 my husband and I 在句中當動詞的主詞時,才使用 I。例如:

  • You and I often argue on this subject. (你我經常吵這個話題) (正) - You and I 是動詞 argue 的主詞。
  • My wife and I accept your invitation. (我太太和我接受你的邀請) (正) - My wife and I 是動詞 accept 的主詞。

  • It is a gift from my husband and I/me.

問題:I 或 me 呢?
步驟 1: 把 “my husband and” 拿掉。
3a: It is a gift from I. (誤)
3b: It is a gift from me. (正)

所以:

  • It is a gift from my husband and me. (正)
  • It is a gift from my husband and I. (誤)

Q:在 I want to invite all of them.

A:不可以! 大多數人可能都認為,由於 all of + 名詞時,of 可以省略 (both of 和 half of 的情況亦然),因此在所有 all of 的句型或用法中,都可以將 of 省略,非也! 這僅適用於 all of 後接 the, our, your, this, those, his, her 等限定詞、再接名詞的情況,若是接 us, you, them, it, him 和 her 等 (受格) 代名詞,那麼 of 就不能省略,否則就大錯特錯了。例如:

  • All of you must go there.
  • I want to invite all of them.
  • A: Where is my cake?
B: I’ve eaten all it. (誤) (我把它全部吃光了) - all it 須改為 all of it 才對。

All you need is a good night’s sleep.

Q:I’ve been working as a dog. 和 I’ve been working like a dog.

  • His father works as a carpenter.
  • Before I became a translator I worked as a teacher.
  • Newspaper may be used as a vehicle for publicity.
  • The sea can be used as a source of energy.
  • He’s going to the fancy dress party as Superman.

I’ve been working as a dog.

  • I’ve been working like a dog.
  • She was like a daughter to me.
  • Wendy looks a bit like her brother.
  • Tony is very like his father.

I’ve been working like a dog. 事實上,to work like a dog 是成語,亦可寫成 to work like a horse/slave,意為「做牛做馬般地幹活;拼命工作;辛勤工作」。注意:我們可以使用 just, very, quite, not much, not at all, a bit 等程度副詞來修飾 like。例如:

  • Jesse’s very serious, not at all like his father, perhaps more like his mother at times.

  • Kate has been playing golf as a professional for three years.
  • Sophia plays golf like a professional.

Q:What time do you go to school? 和 At what time do you go to school?

At what time do you go to school? It is at seven o’clock.

What time do you go to school?,亦即省略 at;這種寫法或說法相當常見且廣泛被接受。

What time do you go to school at?

  • What day is your birthday?
= On what day is your birthday?
=What day is your birthday on?
  • What year did Ma Ying-Jeou re-elect President?
= In what year did Ma Ying-Jeou re-elect President?
= What year did Ma Ying-Jeou re-elect President in?

  • When do you go to school?
  • When is your birthday?
  • When did Ma Ying-Jeou re-elect President?

最後值得一提的是,雖然 “At what time …” 和 “What time …” 譬如說,有位刑事調查員問說 “At what time did the bomb go off?” 不過,這位調查員也可能這樣問 “What time did the bomb go off?”。 都要比 “At what time …”

  • I am very busy. Can you come another time? Can you come at another time?
  • What time did you go to bed last night? At what time did you go to bed last night?

Q:He owns a farm, mansion, orchard, and estate.

A:He owns a farm, mansion, orchard, and estate. He owns a farm, a mansion, an orchard, and an estate.。

He owns a car, yacht, house, and company.

  • In spring, summer, or in winter (誤)
  • In spring, summer, or winter (正)
  • In spring, in summer, or in winter (正)
  • The French, the Italians, Spanish, and Portuguese (誤)
  • The French, Italians, Spanish, and Portuguese (正)
  • The French, the Italians, the Spanish, and the Portuguese (正)

Q:假設台南有一所大學叫做 Bing Bing University,那麼英文是寫成 Bing Bing University in Tainan 還是 Bing Bing University at Tainan 呢?

University of California at Berkeley 或 University of California, Berkeley (柏克萊加州大學)、University of California at Los Angeles 或 University of California, Los Angeles (洛杉磯加州大學) 及 University of California at San Diego 或 University of California, San Diego (聖地牙哥加州大學)。
