A:不是。

David wants to continue his studies. (大衛想繼續他的學業);business/environmental studies (商業/環境課程);The college has no queer studies department nor any official queer studies program.

the foreign languages department (外語系)
sports meeting (運動會)
talks table (談判桌)
goods train (貨車)
customs papers (海關文件)
clothes brush (衣刷)

crotch fruit

  • Ma’am, please keep your crotch fruit away from the knives in the kitchen section.
  • Take your crying crotch fruit outside, please.

  • No road accidents were reported in Pescadores throughout August.
  • No dogs are allowed in the restaurant.

  • It was 10 a.m., yet there was no policeman on duty outside the bank.
  • It was 10 a.m., yet there were no policemen on duty outside the bank.
  • In the baseball game last Sunday, no players hit a home run.
  • In the baseball game last Sunday, no player hit a home run.
  • In the baseball game last Sunday, not a single player hit a home run.

  • He must lead a lonely life: He has no wife and no children.

break

  • Give him a break and he’ll succeed.

Taipei’s goal: zero accidents (or accident) on the road.

  • Zero degrees centigrade is the same as 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • We are likely to see zero growth on the stock market this year.
= We are not likely to see any growth on the stock market this year.

Taipei’s goal: Zero accidents (or accident) on the road.

riot

  • The comedy program was a real riot.
  • The play was a riot when it was first produced on Broadway.

earful

  • She gave me an earful about her husband’s infidelities.
  • He gave me an earful about his boss.

Miss, Mr., Mrs., Ms.

Miss Chen is a popular teacher. Mr. Huang is a well-known scholar in ancient Chinese history. Mrs. Ms. Smith is a student.

Compliment, complement (vv., nn.)

Paul complimented Mary on her new dress. (保羅稱讚瑪麗的新衣服漂亮);He was showered with compliments on his excellent performance. Ed likes to pay people compliments. (艾德喜歡讚美人家);They paid her the compliment of making her an honorary member. 由於「接受讚揚、讚美」是 to take a compliment,如 You should take it as a compliment.

Please accept this bottle of wine with the compliments of the chef. This was an excellent dinner — Please give my compliments to the chef! (這頓晚餐很豐盛,請代我向廚師致意);My compliments to your father! I will compliment her with flowers for her birthday.

compliment 的形容詞是 complimentary,意為「恭維的;讚美的;讚揚的;讚賞的;表示敬意的;問候的」,如 complimentary remarks (讚美之詞);My boss was very complimentary about my work. 除上述意思外,complimentary 還有一個非常實用的意思,那就是「(免費) 贈送的」,如 complimentary tickets for the theater (贈送的電影票);The flowers are complimentary.

That’s a five hundred dollar/dollars dress.

That’s a five hundred dollar/dollars dress.

a race for horses = a horse race (賽馬) — a race for horses 的寫法不多見
a chair with arms = an arm chair (扶手椅 — 現在都拼成 armchair)
a leg of a pair of trousers = a trouser leg (褲管)
a sharpener for scissors = a scissor sharpener ([磨剪刀用的] 磨刀石)
a board for darts = a dart board ([投擲飛鏢的] 圓靶 — 現在都拼成 dartboard)

a depot for arms (i.e. weapons) = an arms depot (軍械庫)
a race for arms = an arms race (武器競賽) — a race for arms 的寫法比 an arms race 少見得多
a committee on elections = an elections committee
a tax on sales = a sales tax (營業稅)

  • He’s a ten year old boy.
  • I recently ended a four year extramarital affair.
  • I’m going on a five day business trip to Japan.
