Wait in the wings 意為「伺機而動；準備就緒；隨時可用」。這個慣用語源自劇院。劇院的側面或側翼 (wings) 是舞台兩側的區域，人員可以站在其中觀看舞台上的活動而不被觀眾看到。演員們在上台之前就站在側翼，也就是幕後。替補演員經常站在幕後觀看表演，等待並期待能接替主要演員的角色。這個慣用語在 20 世紀之前就已在使用。
