When the going gets tough, the tough get going

When the going gets tough, the tough get going 是個諺語,意為「越挫越勇;艱難之路,唯勇者行;形勢越困難,勇者志越堅」。這個慣用語於 1950 年代開始使用,最初是被用在美式足球更衣室中,做為激勵球員的用語。

據信德州美式足球教練約翰‧湯瑪斯 (John Thomas) 是第一位使用此慣用語的人。不過,加州美式足球教練法蘭西斯‧萊希 (Francis William Leahy) 亦在大約同時說了這句話。現今這個諺語都被用在日常生活中,做為激勵或鼓勵的用語;它在商業圈更是經常被引用。

在這個諺語中,第一個 going 是 (不可數) 名詞,意為「形勢;事情的進展」,第二個 going 為動詞 go 的現在分詞,與連綴動詞 get 構成片語 get going,在此的意思為「開始採取行動 (to start taking some action)」。

第一個 tough 是形容詞,意為「困難的;棘手的」,第二個 tough 也是形容詞,但與 the 連用構成名詞片語 “the tough”,意為「堅強的人;強悍的人;強者;勇者」。這種「the + 形容詞」的用法,係用來泛指特定的一群人,它是把形容詞後面的名詞省略掉,而這種省略掉名詞的名詞片語,相當於複數普通名詞,須接複數動詞,如 the poor (窮人)、the rich (富人) 等等 - poor 和 rich 的後面都省略了 people。
