我們經常將 ‘ll 用作 will 和 shall 的縮略式。在說話時，will 和 shall 經常被縮略為 ‘ll，尤其是在 I, we, you, they, he, she, it 等主格代名詞之後。例如：
- I’ll see John tomorrow./I’ll be seeing John tomorrow. (我明天要見約翰)
- It’ll be hard to find another secretary. (再找一位秘書有困難)
然而，在一些上下文中，’ll 往往是唯一的選擇。在這樣的情況中，’ll 最好不要被當作 will 或 shall 的縮略式，而要當作一種獨立的形式。
當 ‘ll 被用作獨立形式時，它通常表示個人的決定。例如：
- There’s that restaurant. I’ll get out here and you can park the car over there. (那家餐廳在那裡。我在這裡下車，你可以把車停在那邊) (正)
- There’s that restaurant. I shall/will get out here and you can park the car over there. (誤)
- A: Anyone want a drink? (A：有人想要飲料嗎？)
B: I’ll have an apple juice, please. (B：請給我一杯蘋果汁) (正)
B: I shall/will have an apple juice, please. (誤)
在表示決定或安排時，如果使用 will 或 shall 聽起來會顯得太直接或太正式，那麼可以使用 ‘ll 來代替。例如：
- My girlfriend’s free on Monday. So we’ll meet for lunch next Monday. (我女友週一有空。所以我們下週一要見面一起吃午餐)
- We’ll get the train to Taipei and then the Metro to Taipei Zoo. Mary and the girls’ll join us as soon as they’ve finished their job interviews. (我們會搭火車到台北，然後搭捷運到台北動物園。瑪麗和那些女孩一旦完成她們的求職面試就會加入我們的行列)
不過，要注意的是，在寫作中，名詞片語 + ‘ll (如上例的 Mary and the girls’ll) 通常不被接受。例如：
- David’s son will be four years old next month. (大衛的兒子下個月就四歲了) (正)
- David’s son’ll be four years old next month. (誤)
‘ll 亦不可用在附加問句或簡答中。例如：
- A: You’ll have some donuts, won’t you, Sam? (A：山姆，你要吃些甜甜圈，是不是？)
- B: Yeah, I will. (B：是的，我要) (正)
B: Yeah, I’ll. (誤)
