Epigram 意為「警句，雋語；詼諧短詩」，如 The famous epigram attributed to Joseph Stalin says that: “The death of one man is a tragedy. The death of millions is statistics.” (史達林名言：「一個人的死亡是一場悲劇。千百萬人的死亡則是統計數字」)；My favorite epigram is “I can resist everything except temptation.” (我最喜歡的雋語是「除了誘惑，我什麼都能抗拒」)。
Epigraph 意為「題詞；碑文；銘文」，如 I liked the epigraph in that book. (我喜歡那本書的題詞)；An epigraph is an effective literary tool, but only a very few writers know how to utilize it. (題詞是一種有效的文學工具，但知道怎樣使用題詞的作家並不多)。警句或雋語可能被用作題詞或碑文，亦即 epigram 可能是 epigraph，但這兩個名詞絕對不能互換。
當然了，我們也不可將 epigraph 和 epitaph 混為一談，後者意為「墓誌銘」，專指刻在墓碑上的碑文、銘文。
