Have (got) someone’s number 意為「看清某人的真面目或動機；摸透某人的底細」。這個慣用語的起源無從考證，有人認為源自每支電話都有獨一無二的號碼。問題是，此慣用語自至少 1853 年就開始使用至今，而美國的第一個電話機專利是在 1876 年由加拿大發明家暨企業家貝爾 (Alexander Graham Bell) 所取得。
已知最早使用這個慣用語的人是英國大文豪狄更斯 (Charles Dickens)，他在他的小說《荒涼山莊》(Bleak House) 中寫道：”… and that you have got that person’s number, and it’s Number One.”。若干語源學家認為 have someone’s number 與 have someone’s measure (或 have the measure of someone) 為同義詞。
