Bite one’s tongue

Bite one’s tongue 意為「忍住不說;緘口不語」。雖然莎士比亞在《亨利六世 (第二部)》(Henry VI, Part 2) 中使用了這個慣用語,但它的確切起源並不清楚。一般認為應該跟它的字面意思有關。當一個人不小心咬到自己的舌頭時,即使想要說話也難,因為說話時可能會痛,只好忍住不說。

當有人要你 bite your tongue 時,他們的意思是說,你應該保持緘默、緘口不語,以免出言不遜、出言無狀或口出惡言傷人,甚至口不擇言說出讓自己後悔的話。
