Had better

  • You had better go before it rains.
= You’d better go before it rains.
= You better go before it rains.
  • I’d better be making tracks.
    = I’d better get going.
= I’d better be off in a (little) bit.

  • You should go to school today.
  • You ought to go to school today.

另外,順便一提的是,ought to 在口語中經常寫成 “oughta” 或發 “otta” 的音,就像 have to 經常發成 “hafta” (has to 發 “hasta”) 的音一樣。

  • You should brush your teeth before you go to bed.
  • He should dress more appropriately for the office.

  • You shouldn’t say anything.
  • He should get back to work.
  • We should meet early.

  • You’d better do what I say or else you will get into trouble.
  • I’d better get back to work or else my boss will be angry with me.
  • We’d better get to the airport by five or else we may miss the flight.

  • You had best get home before midnight.
  • We’d best get going.

  • You’d better not disturb him.
  • You had better not miss the last bus.
You had not better miss the last bus.

What had we better do?

  • Hadn’t you better take an umbrella?
  • Hadn’t you better ask him first?
  • Hadn’t we better go now?

  • You’d better not go out today, had you?
  • You had better go for a doctor, hadn’t you?

  • I think I’d better be/get going.
  • We’d better be getting our clothes ready.
  • We had better be watching TV.
  • We had better be starting back now.
  • You had better have done it.
  • You had better have stayed with us.

  • Better not do it.
  • Better not wait for him.
  • Better say yes, if your wife asks you.
