Exception

With the exception of John, everyone passed the exam. (除約翰外,每個人都通過了考試);I took the greatest exception to his rude remarks.

With the exception of 意為「除… Everyone was in favor, with the sole exception of the governor.

Dead center, dead on the target, dead reckoning, dead right

Dead center 意為「正中心」,即絕對精確的中心點,如 to aim for the dead center (瞄準正中心) – 這裡 dead 是形容詞修飾語。 His shot was dead on the target. (他射得正中目標),His criticism on my mistakes is dead on the target. (他對我的錯誤提出批評,真是一針見血);dead ahead (正前方)。

Dead right 意為「絕對正確;完全正確」,對得無以復加,就像死亡一樣不能逆轉:You’re dead right.

有些人可能不知道 dead 除了當形容詞和副詞外還可當名詞用,如 in the dead of night (深夜),in the dead of winter (隆冬)。這裡 dead (或 in the dead of) 意為「最寂靜的時候;最冷清的時刻」。

Awhile, a while

It took a while to get down the hill. (下山需要一點時間),句中 a while 與其他名詞片語如 an hour 或 a long time 的作用一樣。 It took awhile to get down the hill.,句中 awhile 與副詞片語 quite long 或比較級副詞 longer 的作用一樣。

I’ll stay for a while. I’ll stay for awhile.。 I’ll stay a while. 或 I’ll stay awhile. I’m waiting for him/the bus. Let’s wait (for) a while.

Regarding, as regards, in regard(s) to, with regard(s) to

In regard to, with regard to, regarding 和 as regards 都是標準且同義的介系詞片語,雖然長度比 about 和 concerning 略長且變化較多,但意思大致相同,意為「關於」:He knew nothing regarding [as regards, in regard to, with regard to] the case.

With [my] [best or kind] regards to your family

Basis, on the basis of, on a basis of, on a … basis

What is the basis of/for your opinion? 由於 basis 有許多一般的應用,通常是與複合介系詞構成 on the basis of 和 on a basis of 等片語 — 如 Is it safe to predict the result on the basis of one opinion poll?

許多專業寫作人士一直呼籲使用較簡單、較簡短的字詞來代替,如 on, after, because, by 或 because of。 On the basis of what we’ve just heard, I think we ought to cancel the performance. (根據我們剛剛聽說的,我認為我們應該取消這項表演) 這句中,使用 in view of 比 on the basis of 簡短,because of 又更短,而最短的是使用 after (不過,after 會略微改變原來的意思)。

Harvard operates on an each-tub-on-its-own-bottom basis. (哈佛大學的運作方式是各學院獨立自主);The anti-virus service on a pay-as-you-go basis is no longer available on our website. (本網站不再提供用多少付多少的掃毒服務);It’s done on a case-by-case basis. (那是依個案來處理) – 在此,on a case-by-case basis = on a basis of the individual case。

附註:

  1.  each tub on its own bottom
  2. pay as you go 意為「用多少付多少」。

Gut, guts, gut course, gut feeling, gut reaction, gut response

He is a man with plenty of guts.

Gut the rabbit before you cook it. (烹飪兔肉之前,先把牠的內臟取出),The factory was gutted by flames.

Jobless

She’s been jobless for six months. He’s one of the thousands of jobless in this city. (他是本市數千名失業者之一),There are over 1,000 jobless in our town.

Verbal, oral, orally, verbally

I gave him verbal approval. I gave him spoken/oral approval. I gave him written approval. 或 I gave him approval in writing.。

因此,建議使用 to inform in speech 和 to inform in writing 或其他用語來表達確切的「口頭」和「書面」的意思,以免遭到雞蛋裡挑骨頭。

Blame

They blamed the Americans for the failure of the talks.
= They blamed the failure of the talks on the Americans.
They blamed the rise in oil prices for the big increase in inflation.

當動詞用時,blame 還有一個片語也滿常見的,那就是:be to blame (for),意為「應 (為…) The students were not to blame for the fault.

The judge laid/put the blame for the accident on the driver of the truck.
We are ready to take/bear the blame for what has happened.

By and by, by and large, by the by, by the way, bye-bye, bye

By and by 意為「不久,很快」(= before long; soon; sooner or later);by the by 和 by the way 都意為「順便一提;對了」(= incidentally; please note);by and large 意為「一般來說;總而言之,總之;大體上,總的來說」(= altogether; on the whole; in general; generally speaking)。By and large 也是航海詞彙,如 to sail by and large — 意為「順風航行」。

Bye-bye 原為兒語 (baby talk) 的「再見」(goodbye),但在另一句兒語 (to go bye-bye) 則被用作名詞 – to go bye-bye 意為「散步;離開;走開」。
