Real 和 true 這兩個經常見到或用到的形容詞均意為「真實的；真正的」，但含意並不相同，不少人因此用錯或錯用而不自知，實有加以釐清的必要。譬如說，在 It’s a real man, not a robot. (那是真人，不是機器人) 這句中，real 不能用 true 來代替，因為 real 表示真的，非人造的。
Real 意為「真的；真實的；實際的；真正的」，是指某事物事實上存在的，不是想像、虛構或捏造的，如 He’s a real man. (他是真正的男子漢)；These flowers are not real. (這些花都不是真實的)；This is real leather, not plastic. (這是真皮，不是塑膠的)；That’s the real truth. (那是實情)；Robert had many illnesses, both real and imaginary. (羅伯特有許多病，有些病是真的，有些則是想像出來的)。
True 意為「真實的；真正的；事實上的」，是指事物與事實及真實情況相符，符合事實，不是編造的，並無虛假，如 That’s a true story. (那是真實的故事)；A lot of people don’t understand the true face of communism. (許多人不瞭解共產主義的真面目)；It is true Mary’s getting married. (瑪麗真的要結婚了)；The news is true. (這消息千真萬確)；Teresa has always been a true friend to me. (泰瑞莎一直是我真正/忠實的朋友)。
不過，real 和 true 有時可以互換，如 Real/True love should last forever. (真愛應亙久不變)。
