這兩個名詞各有一個學術方面專門的意思以及一個比較一般性的意思。在學術圈，thesis 通常是指取得碩士學位 (master’s degree) 之前所撰寫的碩士論文 (master’s thesis)，而 dissertation 通常指取得博士學位 (doctor’s degree, Ph.D. [doctor of philosophy] degree, or doctorate) 之前所撰寫的博士論文 (doctoral dissertation or Ph.D. dissertation) — 不過，有些大學依照慣例都把博士論文叫做 doctoral thesis，如 He wrote a doctoral thesis on the works of William Shakespeare. (他寫了一篇有關莎士比亞作品的博士論文)。至於將碩士論文叫做 master’s dissertation 的情況相當罕見，但也並非完全沒有。
這兩個字的比較一般性的意思也是標準英語：dissertation 意為「長篇大論的演講；學術演講」，如He delivered us a long dissertation on the importance of banking regulations. (他對我們發表一篇有關銀行管理之重要性的冗長演說)；thesis 意為「(有理論根據的口頭或書面的) 論點，論述」，如 Their main thesis is that inflation is caused by increases in the money supply. (他們的主要論點是：通貨膨脹是由貨幣供給增加造成的)。
