Chew the fat 意為「閒聊，閒談」。這個慣用語直到 1880 年代才開始被用來表示這意思。在此之前，它在英國的意思是「抱怨，發牢騷」。
這個慣用語可能源自航海，傳說航海的人在船上常常一邊咀嚼鹽醃的豬肉 (肉上面的油脂都已硬化，必須用力咀嚼才能消化) 一邊閒聊打發時間或一邊抱怨海上漫長的生活。
另有一說是，這個慣用語源自美洲原住民因紐特人 (Inuit)。根據因紐特人的古老傳統，他們為了取得動物毛皮，會用牙齒把毛皮上的肥油咬掉，由於這要花滿多的時間，因此他們就一邊咬一邊聊起天來了。
