和 2009’s results were excellent.

所以,2009’s results were excellent. The results for/of 2009 were excellent.,因為有人可能會誤以為 “2009’s results” 是某種複數型態 (當然它不是,但有人就是會搞混)。

Best of both worlds

The best of both worlds

  • Mary is a mother and a career woman, so she has the best of both worlds.
  • Paul lives in the country and works in a big city, so he gets the best of both worlds.
  • Jack is a fellow at the university, so he has the privileges of a professor and the freedom of a student. He has the best of both worlds.

Not see the forest for the trees

Not see the forest for the trees Not see the wood for the trees

old man

  • I’m going to take the old man out for a drink tonight.

  • My old man‘s promised to take me to the concert.

Shoot the breeze

  • We sat on the park bench, just shooting the breeze.
  • I just shot the breeze with Simon for a while when I passed him on the stairs this morning.
  • We sat around most of the evening, shooting the breeze and drinking beer.

Road hog

  • That road hog nearly knocked an old woman over.
  • Look at that road hog driving in the middle of the road and stopping other drivers from passing him.
  • Stay in your own lane, you road hog!

Q:cannot, can’t 和 can not 有何不同呢?

A:“cannot” 和 “can not” 是截然不同的兩個字,兩者不可互換。Cannot (不能) 是 can (= be able to) (能) 的否定形式。

You can not only borrow the car but you can also borrow my camping equipment. No, you can NOT wash the dog in the washing machine. 你不可以將狗放進洗衣機去洗);You can NOT go to the movies!

Do a Houdini, pull a Houdini

Do a Houdini (act) 和 pull a Houdini (act) 為同義慣用語,意為「一溜煙就不見了;突然消失了;突然跑走或逃脫了」。

Do a Houdini (act) 和 pull a Houdini (act) 於 20 世紀開始使用,並於 1980 年代聲名鵲起。

There’s no time like the present

There’s no time like the present 是個諺語,意為「目前正是好時機」,其中 the present 意為「目前,現在」。 不過,在實際的使用上,我們有時會省略 there’s,而變成 no time like the present。

例句:

  • A: When do you want me to start washing the car?
B: Well, there’s no time like the present. (B:
  • Start studying for the big exam now, instead of waiting till the night before. No time like the present, is there?
