Quite 的用法和意思

Quite 為程度副詞,視其後所接的字詞而定,它有兩個意思:1.「相當,尚可,頗,有幾分」(rather, fairly, to some degree);2.「很,非常,完全,十分」(very, totally or completely)。例如:

  • Laura had been quite good at drawing when she was at school. (蘿拉求學時頗為擅長繪畫)
  • We were quite excited about buying a new car. (我們對買了新車都感到相當興奮)
  • His life has been quite different ever since his wife died. (從他太太過世起,他的生活就完全不一樣了)
  • The victim remembered those rogues quite clearly. (受害者十分清晰地記得那些流氓)

Quite + 可分等級的形容詞和副詞

Quite 與可分等級的形容詞或副詞 (有比較級和最高級形式的形容詞或副詞) 連用時,通常表示「相當,尚可,頗,有幾分」的意思。例如:

  • It’s quite cold/warm today. (今天相當冷/相當暖和) - Quite + 形容詞。
  • Duke ran quite fast until they were already out of sight. (杜克跑得相當快,直到他們都已看不見了) - Quite + 副詞。
  • Mary comes to visit her parents quite often. (瑪麗頗常探望她的父母親) - Quite + 頻率副詞。

Quite + 不可分等級的形容詞和副詞

Quite 與不可分等級的形容詞或副詞 (極限形容詞或副詞,即通常沒有比較級和最高級形式的形容詞或副詞) 連用時,通常表示「很,非常,完全,十分」的意思。例如:

  • You’re quite right/wrong. (你完全正確/完全錯了)
  • The professor is quite clearly fond of flowers. (很顯然這位教授喜歡花)
  • The scenery was quite incredible. (風景很美)

注意:在口語中,這項用法的 quite 跟它所修飾的形容詞和副詞一樣都要唸重音。

Quite + 名詞

Quite + a/an/some + 名詞具有強調該名詞的作用;quite a/an/some 意為「相當」。例如:

  • Joyce’s quite a girl. (喬伊絲可不是普通的女孩)
  • It was quite a/some party. (那是一場頗為特別的聚會)
  • It was quite an/some idea. (那是個相當棒的想法)

Quite a bit, quite a few, quite a lot

Quite 經常與 a bit、a few 和 a lot 連用來構成 quite a bit、quite a few 和 quite a lot。這三個相當常用的片語為同義詞,意為「大量,許多」。例如:

  • We should ask Paul for some advice. He knows quite a bit about skateboarding. (我們應該要求保羅給我們一些意見。他很懂滑板)
  • Quite a few (of) people has signed for this dating app. (不少人已經在這款交友應用程式上註冊)
  • His sisters spent quite a lot of money on clothes. (他的姊妹花了許多錢買衣服)

Quite a bit 和 quite a lot 亦可表示「經常,常常」的意思。例如:

  • I used to go swimming quite a bit. (我過去常游泳)
  • Does Bruce come here quite a lot? (布魯斯常來這裡嗎?)

Quite a bit/a lot + 比較級

Quite a bit 和 quite a lot 經常與比較級形容詞或副詞連用來表示「非常,很大程度上」(much, very much) 的意思。例如:

  • It’s quite a bit colder/warmer today. (今天冷得多/暖和得多)
  • We went to Thailand when I was quite a bit younger. (在我很年輕時,我們去了泰國)
  • The new smartphone is quite a lot lighter than the old model. (這款新智慧型手機比舊機型輕很多)
    = The new smartphone is much lighter than the old model.

Quite + 動詞

Not quite = not completely

我們經常使用 not quite 來表示 not completely 的意思,即「不太;不完全是;不是全部」,其後可接形容詞、副詞、名詞、動詞、分詞片語、介系詞片語和 wh- 子句。例如:

  • The door was not quite closed. (門沒有全部關上)
  • There were not quite as many/interesting/expensive as last time. (沒有像上一次那麼多/那麼有趣/那麼貴)
  • I don’t quite know why Eunice didn’t come. (我不是很清楚尤妮絲為什麼沒來)
    = I don’t know quite why Eunice didn’t come.
  • I couldn’t quite remember where she lived. (我不太記得她住在哪裡了)
    = I couldn’t remember quite where she lived.
  • Cindy hesitated, not quite knowing what to do. (辛蒂猶豫了,不太清楚要做什麼)
  • That’s not quite what I meant. (那不完全是我所要表達的意思)

Not quite 亦可用作簡答。例如:

  • A: Are you ready, Kevin? (你準備好了嗎,凱文?)
    B: No, not quite. (沒有,還沒)
