Real, true (adjs.)

It’s a real man, not a robot.

He’s a real man. (他是真正的男子漢);These flowers are not real. (這些花都不是真實的);This is real leather, not plastic. (這是真皮,不是塑膠的);That’s the real truth. (那是實情);Robert had many illnesses, both real and imaginary.

Attempt, try (vv.)

I’ll try and find my lost pet dog.

John attempted to finish his creation before December. (約翰試圖在十二月之前完成他的創作);Her father attempted suicide by burning charcoal last night. (她父親昨晚企圖燒炭自殺);Several prisoners attempted to escape but failed.

Hear, Listen (vv.)

I like listening to music.

I can hear Cindy sing a song. (我聽到辛蒂唱歌);No one could hear what the professor said. (沒有人聽見教授說了什麼);I heard John laughing.

Teresa is listening to the radio. (泰瑞莎正在聽廣播);Listen carefully to the manager’s instructions. (仔細聆聽經理的指示);Peter listened for his mother’s cough.

  • Amy listened but heard nothing.
  • I heard Judy talking but did not listen to what she said.

-able, -ible

Bias, prejudice (nn.)

The boss was accused of bias towards employees over 50. (那個老闆被控對 50 歲以上的員工有偏見);The art collector has a bias in favor of Monet. (這位藝術品收藏家偏愛莫內的畫作);Professor Lee could not possibly be under any bias.

-ic, -ical

Sound, voice (nn.)

Molly began screaming at the top of her voice.

We can hear the sound of bees. (我們能聽到蜜蜂嗡嗡的聲音);I heard strange sounds from the basement. (我聽到從地下室傳來各種奇怪的聲音);The students didn’t make a sound as they left the classroom. (學生悄無聲息地離開了教室);We could hear the sound of voices/laughter/footsteps.

Donna is not in good voice. (唐娜現在嗓子不好);Mary’s voice is very sweet. (瑪麗的聲音很甜);John has got a bad cold and he has lost his voice. (約翰得了重感冒,他的聲音都沙啞了);Robin is a man with a soft/deep/loud voice.

Voice 除了上述字面的意思外,還經常做比喻用,意為「發言權、表達意見權」,其句型為 to have a voice (in sth.),如 They have no voice in the matter.

Fact, truth (nn.)

(事實勝於雄辯);The soap opera is based on historical fact. The teacher told us a lot of interesting facts about baseball. (老師告訴我們許多有關棒球的有趣事實);Let’s just stick to the facts and not jump to any conclusions.

It is universal truth that holds true for the whole world. (這是一項放諸四海皆準的普遍真理;Truth lies at the bottom of a well. (真理不易被發現);There’s not any truth in these rumors. (這些謠傳沒有任何真實性);Only after several months of investigating did the police finally get to the truth.

I didn’t go out because of the fact that it was raining.

Hire, rent (vv.)

We can hire a car at the airport. (我們可以在機場租車);I’ll have to hire a suit for Mary’s funeral. (我得為瑪麗的喪禮租一套西裝);He’s running a car hire company. Is that your own photocopier or do you rent it? (那台影印機是你自己的還是租來的?);I’m poor as a church mouse and rent my television. That mansion is often hired out for private parties. (那棟豪宅常租給人開私人派對);There are several companies in Kaohsiung that hire out yachts to tourists.

Center, middle (nn.)

My wife lived in the middle of Taiwan.

Taipei is not only the center of politics and economy for Taiwan but also gradually developing as the center of world economy. (台北不僅是台灣的政經中心,而且也逐漸發展成為世界經濟中心);Kevin stood in the center of a large group. (凱文站在一大群人的中央);This is the center of the circle.

My father went on a business trip to the middle of Vietnam in the middle of January. (我父親一月中旬到越南中部出差);A Mercedes Benz was driving right in the middle of the road. (一輛賓士行駛在路的正中間);Amy was taken ill suddenly in the middle of a meeting. (艾美開會開到一半突然病倒了);The pouring rain began in the middle of the night.

Sam’s standing in the center of the classroom. (山姆站在教室的正中央);Sam’s standing in the middle of the classroom. 此外,center 前面的介詞可用 at 或 in,而 middle 僅能用 in,如 There is a big table at/in the center of the school cafeteria.
