No longer, not any longer

No longer 和 not any longer 均意為「不再」,一般視之為同義詞,但 no longer 比較正式。例如:

  • I could stand John’s rudeness no longer.
  • I couldn’t stand John’s rudeness any longer.

No longer 和 not any longer 的反義詞為 still。例如:

  • She no longer works here.
  • She doesn’t work here any longer.
  • She still works here.

  • Jack no longer plays in the rock band.
  • What I could no longer stand was that they were always complaining.
  • Mary is no longer living in Taipei.

  • No longer did I dream of winning the lottery a very long time ago. I know my life will be very ordinary.

然而,在回答問話時,我們只能用 not any longer,不可用 no longer。例如:

  • A: Are you still living in Taipei?
B: Not any longer.
    No longer.
    No, not still.
