Q:”the creation of man” 是「創造人」還是「人的創造」?

Our love for God — We love God. God’s love for us — God loves us.

由上述可知,「NP of NP」結構可能只有殆無疑義的單一意思 (如 the legs of the table),也可能有模稜兩可的雙重意思 (如 the love of God)。

to create man — (上帝) 創造人
Man creates something —

不過,若右 NP 為非人或非動物,則不產生主詞動詞關係,只有動詞受詞關係,如 the creation of the world (創造世界,即 to create the world),the loss of energy (精力的消耗,即 to lose energy 消耗精力)。

(NP1 = NP2):the City of New York (紐約市) — New York is the city;the art of painting (繪畫藝術) — painting is the art:the problem of unemployment (失業問題) — unemployment is the problem。
  • 主屬關係 (NP1 屬於 NP2):the publishing industry of Taipei (台北的出版業);the children of the family (那家的孩子)。
  • 主屬關係 (NP1 屬於 NP2 — 某人屬於某地):the intelligentsia of Paris (巴黎的知識份子);the Chen of Kaohsiung (高雄陳)。
  • 修飾關係 (NP1 修飾 NP2):a glass of beer (一杯啤酒);two pounds of sugar (兩磅糖);three kilometers of bad road (三公里難以行駛的路);ten years of age (十歲)。
  • 修飾關係 (NP2 修飾 NP1):a box of wood (木箱);a house of stone (石屋);a girl of ten (十歲的女孩);a matter of importance (重要事件 — an important matter);a man of ability (有能力的人 — an able man)。

Q:”In came John.”

至於這些會導致句子倒裝的否定副詞或副詞片語包括 never, nowhere, no sooner. not only, neither, nor, no more, no longer, seldom, only, hardly, scarcely , barely, rarely, little, under/in no circumstances, on no account, by no means, in no way 等等。例如:

  • Never have I seen such a wicked man.
  • On no account must this employee be removed.
  • No sooner had I left than the rain began to come.
  • Very seldom do these solutions meet the needs of old people.

  • Never have I read a more curious book.
  • I have never read a more curious book.

  • Up jumped the puppy.
  • Out came my boss and his secretary.
  • Down fell the rotten branches from the tree.

  • Out you go, you little rascal!
  • So down to the basement I went.

Sensual, sensuous (adjs.)

是故,sensual 的含意大多是不好的、負面的,如 purely sensual pleasures (純粹肉體上的快樂);He is always indulging in the sensual pleasures of eating and drinking. (他老是耽溺於吃喝的口腹之樂);He led a sensual life. (他沈迷酒色);sensual curves/lips (性感的曲線/嘴唇);Catherine is a sensual anchorwoman.

是故,這個字的含意都是好的、正面的,如 sensuous music/poetry (悅耳的音樂/動人心弦的詩歌);the sensuous feeling of soft velvet on the skin (柔軟的天鵝絨給皮膚帶來舒服的感受);She uses beautiful sensuous lines in her drawings.

(8:20):(It’s) twenty past/after eight
9點二十一分 (9:21):twenty-one minutes (註) past/after nine
9點四十六分 (9:46):fourteen minutes (註) to/of/before/till ten (差14分10點)
(10:50):ten to/of/before/till eleven (差10分11點)

現在進入主題:當時間為半小時或一刻鐘 (15分鐘) 時,順讀法如上述由左至右讀,如 22:15 讀作 twenty-two fifteen 或 ten fifteen、10:30 讀作 ten thirty;然而,如果是使用有 past 和 to 等介系詞的逆讀法,則「半小時」不用 thirty 而要用 half 來表達,「一刻鐘或15分鐘」不用 fifteen 而要用 (a) quarter 來表達 — “a” 可以省略 (註),如 9:15 讀作 quarter past nine (不是 fifteen past nine)、11:45 讀作 quarter to twelve (不是 fifteen to twelve),而 9:30 讀作 half past nine (不是 thirty past nine)。 The new Fowler’s Modern English Usage 一書,在英格蘭和威爾斯,許多年輕人現在使用像 half seven (省略 past) 這樣的寫法或讀法來表示「七點半」(7:30 a.m.

在一般會話中,大多數英美人士對於 5分鐘、10分鐘、15分鐘及其他 5 之倍數的分鐘,都直接說成 five past two、ten past four、twenty to six、a quarter to ten 等等,但對於非 5 之倍數的分鐘,通常要加上 minutes,如「七點四分」要說成 four minutes past seven (不是 four past seven),而「九點四十八分」要說成 twelve minutes to ten (不是 twelve to ten),其餘依此類推。另外,在「半小時」和「一刻鐘」的說法中,half 的前面不可有 “a”,所以我們可以說 half past six 或甚至 half six,但不能說 a half past six;而 quarter 的前面則可以有 “a”,但 “a” 可以省略,所以說 quarter past six 或 a quarter past six 都可以,會話中通常省略 “a”。 I ate a quarter of an orange. I ate quarter of an orange.。

  • The train arrived at three o’clock on the dot. (或 The train arrived on the dot of three o’clock.)
= The train arrived at three o’clock on the hour.
= The train arrived at three o’clock sharp.
= The train arrived at three o’clock exactly (或 at exactly three o’clock).

Q:She saved what little she could from her meager income to help poor children.

What book did you buy?

    (that…which, those… which, all…that, any…that) —

例句:I gave what (few) books I had.

例句:What beautiful weather! (多麼好的天氣!);What a fool that man is!

    例句:What is the price?

thing or things that, that which, those which, all that, any
    that) — 意為「所…

I believed what he told me.

I gave what book I had.,那就錯了 (book 須為複數);再舉一例:What people (複數可數名詞) I met there were very friendly to me. = All the people that I met there were very friendly to me. I will give you what help (不可數名詞) I can. = I will give you as much help as I can.

I gave what books I had. 在問題的句子中,what little 是 what little money 的省略,而這又等於 all the little money that,所以該句可以改寫為 She saved all the little money that she could from her meager income to help poor children.。 We did what little we could to help the refugees.

what few 或 what little 中的 few 或 little 有時可省略,如上述關係形容詞的例句 I gave what (few) books I had.,又如 I contributed what (little) money (= all the little money that I had) towards the fund. I told him what little I knew on the subject.

I gave him what I had. (我把我所有的都給了他);He deposits what he saves in a bank.

Q:He wanted to find a companion to travel.

A:不對! He wanted to find a companion to travel with. He wanted to travel with a companion.

  • He has a big house to live.
  • He has a big house to live in. (正)
= He has a big house which/that he can live in.
= He has a big house in which he can live.
(由於 live 是不及物動詞,所以要接受詞 house 時,其後須有介系詞 in — to live a big house 是錯的,必須寫成 to live in a big house)
  • I need a friend to talk.
  • I need a friend to talk with. (正)
(由於 talk 是不及物動詞,所以要接受詞 friend 時,其後須有介系詞 with — to talk a friend 是錯的,必須寫成 to talk with a friend)

  • They have no children to take care of.
  • She wanted to have a chair to sit on.

  • I have a lot of homework to do. (我有許多家庭作業要做) (do 是及物動詞,直接接受詞,無需介系詞 — to do a lot of homework)
  • Give me something to eat.
  • Would you like something to drink?
  • I need a book to read.
  • Do you have anything more to say?

  • I have nothing to write.
  • I have nothing to write with. May I use your pen?
  • I have nothing to write on. Please give me a piece of paper.

A:the left/right bank of a river

湖岸也叫 shore,且只能使用這個字 (lake shore),但大湖的岸可以叫做 beach;beach 的主要意思是沙灘,如 we like to play volleyball at the beach.

Replace, substitute (vv.)

He’ll have to replace those tires; they’re badly worn. (他必須更換那些輪胎;它們磨損得太厲害了);George has replaced John as captain of the team. (喬治接替約翰當了隊長);Susan is ill and Laura is to substitute her. (蘇珊病了,羅拉將代替她);George has substituted as captain of the team.

We’ve replaced old calculators with/by computers. (我們已用電腦取代了舊式的計算機);Her photograph was replaced by his painting. (她的照片被他的畫取代了);Home-made parts are being substituted for imported ones.

必須注意的是,許多人搞不清楚這兩個字在上下文中的替代關係:to replace A with/by B 意為「用 B 來替換 A」,亦即 A 被 B 所取代,而 to substitute A for B (or A be substituted for B) 意為「用 A 來替換 B」,亦即 B 被 A 所取代。例如:

I replaced her photograph with/by his painting.
= I substituted his painting for her photograph.
= Her photograph was replaced by his painting.
= His painting replaced her photograph.
= His painting was substituted for her photograph.

beggars can’t be choosers

例句:
I asked Tom to lend me his bicycle, and he sent me this old, rusty one. But beggars can’t be choosers.

Mary: Let me wear your green dress; I don’t like the blue one you lent me. Alice: Beggars can’t be choosers.

Beggars can’t be choosers.
