雙重否定及用法

在標準或正規英語 (standard English) 中，當我們使用諸如 nobody、nowhere、never 或 nothing 等否定詞時，我們通常不使用否定動詞。例如：

  • John had nothing interesting to tell us. (約翰沒有什麼有趣的事要告訴我們) (正)
    John hadn’t nothing interesting to tell us. (誤)
  • It was 10 am but there was nobody in the office. (時間是上午十點，但辦公室卻空無一人) (正)
    … but there wasn’t nobody in the office. (誤)

然而，在某些英語方言中我們會聽到雙重或三重否定。當來自同一地區的人在互相交談時，這種情況很常見。但這樣的雙重否定在正式場合或書面形式中是不被接受的。

Not hardly

Not hardly 是一個在英語中已經存在了很長時間的口語用詞，而且很可能會被保留下來並繼續使用下去，「尾大不掉」，但它在嚴肅的寫作中可能會被認為不合適。由於 hardly 意為「幾乎不」(almost not)，與 barely, scarcely 同義，所以在 hardly 前面加上修飾語 not，會產生雙重否定 (double negative)。從字面上來看，雙重否定、負負得正，not hardly 的意思應該是「肯定」或「非常」。 但實際上，not hardly 與 hardly 的意思完全一樣。

寫作者經常使用 not hardly 來營造口語化的語氣。在我們所發現的許多例子中， 這個片語往往用於簡答。例如：

  • Is this an ideal solution? Not hardly. (這是一個理想的解決方案嗎？幾乎不是)
  • Can I talk to them directly on the phone? Not hardly. (我可以直接透過電話與他們交談嗎？幾乎不行)

雙重否定 (double negative) 並非文法錯誤，但它可能改變寫作者或說話者原本想要表達的意思，尤其是在使用 neither … nor 這個相關字組或相關連接詞 (correlative or correlative conjunction) 時，必須謹慎，別使用雙重否定，因為 neither … nor 在句中已經扮演否定的角色。例如：

  • Duke did not find the key neither on nor under his desk. (誤) － 這是雙重否定，意思跟原意相反。
  • We didn’t have neither money nor food. (誤) － 這是雙重否定，意思跟原意相反。
  • We had neither money nor food. (我們沒有錢也沒有食物) (正)
  • We didn’t have either money or food. (正)

由於「負負得正」，兩個否定等於肯定，因此儘管雙重否定並非文法錯誤，但它的意思可能跟原本要表達的意思正好相反。例如：

  • Edward doesn’t know nothing. (愛德華無所不知) (誤) － 原意是「愛德華一無所知」。
  • Stanley doesn’t believe in no God. (史丹利相信有上帝) (誤) － 原意是「史丹利不相信有上帝」。
  • I haven’t got no money. (我有錢) － 這幾乎肯定不是原意。
  • My wife is not unattractive. (我太太很漂亮) (正) － 這一定是原意。
