To add insult to injury 意為「雪上加霜」，是個非常古老的成語，源自《伊索寓言》(Aesop’s Fables) 中《禿子與蒼蠅》(The Bald Man and the Fly) 的故事。話說有隻蒼蠅停在一個禿子的頭上並且咬了他一口，禿子伸手去打蒼蠅，蒼蠅沒有打到，卻狠狠地打了自己的腦袋。蒼蠅嘲笑他是 add insult to injury。
根據記載，add insult to injury 這個慣用語是在 1748 年首次出現在英文中。英國劇作家愛德華˙摩爾 (Edward Moore) 在其 1748 年出版的喜劇《The Foundling》中寫到 ” This is adding insult to injuries”。
