Q:A total of … 和 The total of …

A:A total of 後接複數名詞,而該複數名詞是句子的主詞,換言之,a total of 接複數動詞 (BE 動詞就是 are 或 were),而 the total of 也是接複數名詞,但句子的主詞卻是 the total,而不是該複數名詞,所以 the total of 接單數動詞 (BE 動詞就是 is 或 was)。兩者的語意並無差異且皆可用 in total, in all, all told 等同義的片語來替換。例如:

  • A total of thirty days were spent on the trip.
= The total of thirty days was spent on the trip.
= In total, thirty days were spent on the trip.
= In all, thirty days were spent on the trip.
= All told, thirty days were spent on the trip.

顯然地,a total of 和 the total of 的文法概念與 a number of 和 the number of 如出一轍。

  • A total of 432 people applied for the three jobs.

His earnings from car racing now total over three million dollars. They weren’t hurt in the accident, but the car was totaled. (他們在車禍中沒有受傷,但車子全毀了);Her new car was totalled in the accident.

The total cost of the project came to over three million dollars. (工程總費用超過三百萬元);The event was a total failure. (活動徹底失敗);Why on earth would you let a total stranger into the house?

His three goals give him a grand total of 30 for the season. (他的三次進球使他本賽季的進球總數達到 30 個);The sum total of my knowledge of astrology is not impressive.

Possible, probable (adjs.)

等學會了區別它們之間的不同後,您自然就會瞭解 “It is not only possible, it is probable.”

Mary told me that she would do everything possible to get married to Sam. (瑪麗告訴我,她將盡一切可能嫁給山姆);It is possible that I might be the CEO of that big company one day. (有朝一日或許我可以成為那家大公司的執行長);Wendy goes on a trip abroad whenever possible. (任何可能的時候,溫蒂都會出國旅遊);It’s no longer possible to find a cheap apartment in Taipei.

Christopher is a probable presidential candidate. (克里斯多福是很有希望的總統候選人);It is very probable that it will rain tonight. (今晚很可能會下雨);It is highly probable that she will find a new job this year. (她今年很可能找新的工作);A civil war in Egypt seems highly probable.

It is likely/possible/probable that + 子句的句型,但其中只有 likely 和 possible 可用於 likely/possible to do 的句型。 It is probable to happen.

  • Mrs. Huang was speechless when she saw several topless photos of her daughter online.
  • I was really speechless about his rude behavior at the restaurant last night.

Envious, jealous (adjs.)

Henry is envious of what his neighbors have. (亨利羨慕他鄰居所擁有的東西);My sister’s very envious of my good fortune. (我妹妹很羨慕我的好運);Sarah is very envious of Teresa’s new car.

Don’t be so jealous of what your brother has. (別這樣嫉妒你哥哥所擁有的東西);I believe some of your friends will be jealous. (我想你的一些朋友會嫉妒的);He gets jealous when other men talk to his girlfriend intimately.

He gets jealous when other men talk to his girlfriend intimately.

  • Barry is very envious of my new job and wishes he had one like that.
  • Barry is very jealous of my new job because he thinks that he should have got the job.

英文:rotten to the core (adj.)

  • The whole family are rotten to the core.
  • Bill said that Kevin is rotten to the core.
  • This organization is rotten to the core.

  • Honey, watch out for my Uncle Jack. He’s very handsy with babes.
  • Be careful on your date with Tony tonight because I have heard he is very handsy with the ladies.

Costly, expensive (adjs.)

That project will be costly. (那項計畫將所費不貲);Jack’s decision to marry Amy was a costly mistake. (傑克作出的娶艾美的決定,是個代價慘重的錯誤);His mother has a lot of costly jewels. My English teacher always wears a ring set with costly emerald.

I don’t think he can afford that expensive smartphone. (我認為他買不起那昂貴的智慧型手機);Teresa always wears expensive clothes. (泰瑞莎總是穿著價格高昂的衣服);Her brother has an expensive watch. (她的哥哥有一只昂貴的手錶);Cindy bought a very expensive book the other day.
