Q:(a) Most books (b) Most my books (c) Most of my books are in English.

A:Most 這個字可當形容詞和代名詞用,若為形容詞,其後直接接名詞,如 Most birds can fly. (大多數的鳥都會飛),所以 (a) Most books are in English.

所謂特指的名詞,就是名詞的前面加上 the, that, this, these, those 或所有格,如 my, his, their, Jack’s, Thomas’ 等等。所以 (c) Most of my books are in English. 也是正確的句子;換言之,(b) Most my books are in English. Most of books are in English.

英文中這種兼具形容詞 (或限定詞) 和代名詞功能且用法與 most 完全相同的字或片語,還有 all (of), both (of), some (of), any (of), many (of), much (of), a few (of), a little (of), several (of), one (of), two (of), three (of) … 等等。例如:

  • Many students are going to study abroad.
Many of my students are going to study abroad.
Many my students are going to study abroad.
Many of students are going to study abroad.
  • Some people are Chinese tourists.
Some of those people are Chinese tourists.
Some those people are Chinese tourists.
Some of people are Chinese tourists.
  • Several windows were broken.
Several of the windows were broken. (正)
Several the windows were broken.
Several of windows were broken.

  • Almost all of my students are female.
Almost all my students are female. (正)
All children deserve encouragement.
All of children deserve encouragement.
  • I know both of his parents.
I know both his parents. (正)
Both paintings are by the same artist.
Both of paintings are by the same artist.

  • Half of the children study Japanese.
Half the children study Japanese. (正)
  • Nearly half of the employees complained of stress.
Nearly half the employees complained of stress. (正)

Q:The ground is soaking wet because it has been raining all night.

  • You’re dripping/soaking/sopping wet!
  • The ground is dripping/soaking/sopping wet because it has been raining all night.

  • Your hands are freezing cold!
  • I remember it was freezing cold that day.

  • All the delicate plants died last night in the freezing cold.
  • I always thought that I wouldn’t be able to stand the freezing cold and the boring darkness before I moved to Moscow.

  • Paul came home roaring drunk last night.
  • Melissa’s roaring drunk.

Q:有人將 so 與動詞連用,即 so 後面接動詞,如 “I so want to go there.”。

  • The chocolate is wonderful, but it’s so expensive.
  • Why is your brother always eating so quickly?

  • I really want to go there.
  • I’m so keen to go there.

I so want to go there.

  • I was so looking forward to meeting your family.
  • I so don’t like his new girlfriend.
  • I so didn’t want to go to that concert.
  • I so love your dress!
  • I am so going to be there!
  • We’re so looking forward to this movie.
  • You are so gonna (= going to) be in trouble when you get home.
  • She so loved watching birds flying in the sky.

Q:I’ve been working as a dog. 和 I’ve been working like a dog.

  • His father works as a carpenter.
  • Before I became a translator I worked as a teacher.
  • Newspaper may be used as a vehicle for publicity.
  • The sea can be used as a source of energy.
  • He’s going to the fancy dress party as Superman.

I’ve been working as a dog.

  • I’ve been working like a dog.
  • She was like a daughter to me.
  • Wendy looks a bit like her brother.
  • Tony is very like his father.

I’ve been working like a dog. 事實上,to work like a dog 是成語,亦可寫成 to work like a horse/slave,意為「做牛做馬般地幹活;拼命工作;辛勤工作」。注意:我們可以使用 just, very, quite, not much, not at all, a bit 等程度副詞來修飾 like。例如:

  • Jesse’s very serious, not at all like his father, perhaps more like his mother at times.

  • Kate has been playing golf as a professional for three years.
  • Sophia plays golf like a professional.

Q:anymore 和 any more 有何不同呢?

  • Teresa doesn’t live here anymore.
  • Don’t you love me anymore?
  • My father doesn’t work anymore.

  • I don’t want any more.
  • Don’t eat any more.
  • I don’t want any more pie.

  • I don’t want to eat any more.
  • Are you feeling any better?
  • Don’t go any closer.
  • If your headache gets any worse, you should see a doctor.

  • I don’t buy books anymore because I don’t need any more books.

My room is small. However, it’s very comfortable.

A:這是因為 while 是連接詞,而 however 是副詞。 My room is small, while it’s very comfortable. My room is small; however, it’s very comfortable.。

My room is small, however it’s very comfortable.,那麼這就成了英文中所謂的「連寫句」(run-on sentences),即兩個子句之間未用連接詞或錯用標點符號的句子。 若這兩個子句一為獨立子句、一為附屬子句 (dependent or subordinate clauses),那麼附屬子句的前面須使用 though, because, while, when, if 等附屬連接詞。

  • Rachel played the piano and her husband sang and danced.
  • Rachel played the piano; her husband sang and danced.
  • Rachel played the piano, her husband sang and danced.
  • Cindy likes coffee while Mary likes tea.
  • Cindy likes coffee, Mary likes tea.
  • While/Whilst Dean likes the color of the hat, he does not like its shape.
  • Dean likes the color of the hat; however, he does not like its shape.
  • Dean likes the color of the hat, however he does not like its shape.
  • Some people like fatty meat, whereas others hate it.
  • Some people like fatty meat; nevertheless, others hate it.
  • Some people like fatty meat, nevertheless others hate it.

  • My room is small. However, it’s very comfortable.
  • My room is small; however, it’s very comfortable.
  • My room is small. It is, however, very comfortable.
  • My room is small. It’s very comfortable, however.

Q:在 All that/what you have to do is to change your attitude. 中。All 的後面該用 that 還是 what 呢?

A:在 All that/what you have to do is to change your attitude.

All you have to do is to change your attitude.。

  • Everything (that) you ordered has been sent by express delivery.
  • The new BMW (that) I bought last week is now in the garage.
  • Never have we met the people that live next door.

不過,what 可引導子句,兼具名詞和關代的功能 (= 「名詞 + 關代」),亦即 what = the thing or things that, that which, those which, all that, any that,意為「所…

  • What I have to do is (to) marry her.
  • What I did was (to) help him with his homework, not do it for him.
  • I believed what he told me.
  • Jerry has no idea about what happened after he left.

If I find the person who has stolen my iPad, I’ll wring his neck! 現今可能的作法之一是使用 “he or she” (這是主格,其受格為 him or her,而所有格為 his or her;但它們也可以且往往寫成 he/she, him/her, his/her) 或 “(s)he”,但這看起來或聽起來都怪怪的。例如:

  • A baby cries when he or she is tired.
  • If a student is absent because of illness, (s)he should call in sick.
  • If in doubt, ask your teacher. He/she can give you more information.

  • If a student is absent because of illness, they should call in sick.

這些結構相當常用,尤其在 everybody, everyone, anybody, anyone, somebody, someone, nobody 以及「every, each, no + 單數的人 (如 person, child, boy, girl 等)」 之後,它們的代名詞通常使用 they (them 或 their)。例如:

  • Everyone should take their belongings with them. Don’t leave them on the shuttle bus.
  • Does everybody know what they want?
  • Somebody’s left their wallet here.
  • If anybody/anyone comes, ask them to wait.
  • Nobody plans to go on a trip to Phnom Penh, do they?
  • Every student in the English class must have their own textbook.

  • Somebody has left her umbrella on the shuttle bus. Could she please come and collect it?

  • No girl under the age of 18 should be allowed to drink alcohol, or perhaps someday they will become a heavy drinker.

Q:John is a fun person. 和 John is a funny person.

  • A comedian is funny.
  • Going to an amusement park is fun.

  • John is a fun person.
  • John is a funny person.

  • Going to a dentist is not fun!
  • Nobody laughed because his joke was not funny.
  • The movie was quite funny.
  • Playing basketball is fun.
  • Playing a game is fun/funny.
  • He’s one of Taiwan’s funniest comedians.
  • A party with your friends is fun.

事實上,fun 的用法很特殊,其句型有二:「事 + is/was/are/were (a lot of/lots of/much) fun (某事很好玩)」及「人 + have/has/had (a lot of/lots of/great/good) fun. 由此可知,英文並無 It has fun.

  • I had lots of fun at the party last night.
  • The party last night was a lot of fun.
  • We hope you have fun at the beach tomorrow!
  • We had great fun comparing the functions of our smartphones.
  • Do come tomorrow, it’ll be good fun.
  • Spending money is fun!

  • Anthony is great/good fun.
  • You’ll love Peter – he’s great/good fun.

請注意這裡的 great/good fun (很有趣的人) 與上面 great/good fun (玩得很愉快) 的不同;兩者構詞一樣,而且主詞都是人,但動詞一個是 BE 動詞、一個是 have/has/had。

  • Tony studied hard, but he failed in the exam.
  • Tony studied hard, yet he failed in the exam.

然而,”yet” 的前面可以放 and 或 but,但 “but” 的前面卻不行。例如:

  • Jenny’s very beautiful, yet she’s rather lazy.
= Jenny’s very beautiful, and yet she’s rather lazy. (正)
= Jenny’s very beautiful, but yet she’s rather lazy. (正)
  • Jenny’s very beautiful, and/but but she’s rather lazy.

  • The sun has not risen yet but I should go to work.

The sun has not risen yet, but I should go to work.。
