  • Almost/nearly all the teachers and students are there.
  • I almost/nearly always go on a business trip to the United State every year.
  • Almost/nearly every time I see him he looks miserable.
  • My wife almost/nearly didn’t wake up on time.

在 not, pretty, very 等副詞之後僅能用 nearly,不可使用 almost。例如:

  • I have not nearly enough money.
  • They pretty nearly failed the exam.
  • He very nearly died.

在 any 以及 no, none, never, nobody, nothing 等否定詞之前僅能用 almost,不可使用 nearly。例如:

  • Almost any student breezed through the exam.
  • I’ve almost never been so annoyed in all my life!
  • There’s almost no (= hardly any) tea left.

在以整十、整百、整千等來表示的約整數 (round numbers) 前面可以使用 about (或 around),如 About 50 people volunteered.

  1. She estimated the crowd at about 5,500.
She estimated the crowd at 5,500. (正)
  2. A crowd of about 100-200 showed up for my wedding.
A crowd of 100-200 showed up for my wedding.

They used to meet at 7:15 a.m. in his office. They used to meet about 7:15 a.m. in his office.

在 about 和 around 兩者同義的其他應用中,around 都比 about 來得常用,如 beat around the bush (說話拐彎抹角,旁敲側擊),all around the world (全世界)。

A woman aged 50 has given birth to twins. (一名 50 歲婦女產下了一對雙胞胎);They’ve got two children, aged 3 and 7.

A woman age 50 has given birth to twins.;They’ve got two children, ages 3 and 7.;Men ages between 18 and 35 are most at risk from violent crime. Men between 18 and 35 years of age are most at risk from violent crime. 或 Men from 18 to 35 years of age are most at risk from violent crime.。

歲時」的意思則用 “at age/ages” 或 “at the age/ages of” 來表達,如 He died at age 80. (他 80 歲逝世);She entered Parliament at the age of 26. (她 26 歲時成為國會議員);The aim of this study was to explore how prenatal drug exposure (PDE) and caregiving environment relate to cognitive, academic, and behavioral performance at ages 6 and 7. The New Fowler’s Modern English Usage 一書指出,at age/ages 是美式英語的用法,而 at the age/ages of 是英式英語的用法,但從實際的應用情況來看,這項區分似乎矯枉過正了,不必當真。再者,在 at age/ages 或 at the age/ages of 中,視所要表達的意思而定,at 可換成其他介系詞,如 By age 6, a child is able to cut softer foods with a knife and is able to tie his or her own shoes. (小孩子到了 6 歲就能用刀子切比較柔軟的食物且能自己繫鞋帶);Men between the ages of 18 and 35 are most at risk from violent crime.。

歲的」意思外,還意為「年老的」,如 an aged man (老翁);He helped take care of his aged grandfather. After his illness he aged quickly. (他病後老得很快);Since her husband’s death, she has aged considerably.

The dishes in the sink need washing/need to be washed as soon as possible. 這句中,need washing 和 need to be washed 的意思有何不同?

Your shoes need cleaning/need to be cleaned.

  • The house needs painting/needs to be painted.
  • The baby’s diaper is wet. It needs changing/needs to be changed.
  • The dishes in the sink need washing/need to be washed as soon as possible.
  • They deserved punishing/deserved to be punished.
  • The roof requires repairing/requires to be repaired.
  • Your coat wants washing/wants to be washed.

Q:為何搭乘汽車是 in a car 而搭乘巴士是 on a bus 呢?

IN:a car, a taxi, a truck, a helicopter, a boat

ON:a bus, a train, a bicycle, a motorbike, a plane, a ship, horseback, elephant

  • I traveled in a car from Taipei to Kaohsiung.
  • I traveled on a train from Taipei to Kaohsiung.

就 in 而言,上/下車是 get in/get out of,如 get in/get out of a taxi;就 on 而言,上/下車是 get on/get off,如 get on/get off a bus。

此外,同樣是 weekend,英國人說 at the weekend,而美國人是說 on the weekend。

Did you phone her yet? Have you phoned her yet?

在非正式美式英語中,yet, already, just 和 ever 這幾個過去時間副詞,現今經常與簡單過去式連用,如 The bell just rang. (鈴剛響過);I already saw him. (我看見過他);Did you eat yet? The bell has just rung.;I’ve already seen him.;Have you eaten yet?

  • Did you ever go to mainland China?
  • Have you ever been to mainland China?

  • The afternoon was so hot that I decided to go to the open-air swimming pool. I love to eat in the open air in the summer.
  • Air traffic was so dense that afternoon that air-traffic control could hardly cope.

大多數的複合形容詞都是由兩個字或有時三個字所構成,而這些字之間通常會使用連字號,下面為一些常見的複合形容詞及經常與其搭配的名詞:a clear-cut decision (明確的決定),a far-fetched explanation (牽強的解釋),a low-cut dress (低胸的洋裝),a free-and-easy relationship (隨便的關係),an off-hand remark (隨口說出的話),cold-blooded murder (冷血、殘忍的謀殺),an all-out effort (全力以赴),a deep-sea diver (深海潛水伕),full-time staff (專職職員),a jet-black sky (烏黑的天空),snow-white shoes (雪白的鞋子)。

  • The products on the shelves were out of date and had to be withdrawn.
  • His out-of-date argument gathered little support.
  • Out-of-work policemen often find employment as security guards, but it is not so easy for teachers who are out of work to find other jobs.

  • Non-profit-making organizations are non-existent in this country.
  • His co-operation in the co-production was much appreciated.

Q:Japan lies ________ the east of Asia. (1) in (2) on (3) to (4) at。

A:in, on, to, at

Unemployment rate in the east of Taiwan is very high.

Taichung is a few hundred kilometers to the north of Kaohsiung.

的邊緣,瀕臨;沿著」(at the edge of; along) 的意思,這也表示在所指地點的範圍外,如 a town on the border (邊界城鎮,亦即靠近邊界的城鎮);New York is situated on the Hudson River. (紐約位於哈德遜河畔);trees on both sides of the street (街道兩旁的樹)。

He was standing at the door. (他站在門口 — 是站在門的前面不是門上);My wife is sitting at the desk reading newspaper.

  • I hope that you pass your exam.

If you need anything, I will get it for you.

  • I hope that you will be able to be a student of National Taiwan University.
  • I hope that you’ll visit us again in the near future.

  1. I hope that he has his passport with him.
  2. I hope that he will have his passport with him.

  • They hope that you’ll remember your promise.
They hope that you remember your promise.
  • I hope that you agree to the proposal.
  • I hope that you will agree to the proposal.

  • I hope that you’re thinking of me.
  • I hope that you’ll be thinking of me.
