Q:在 I have (got) an appointment with my dentist tomorrow. The team members are having a meeting tomorrow. More and more people are owning bicycles.。

A:在 to have a meeting 中,have 到底是狀態動詞 (stative verb),還是動態動詞 (dynamic verb) 呢?

I’m doing my homework, eating a sandwich and watching television all at the same time!。 I’m possessing a bike.。

Are you and your husband going to have any more children? No, we already have three. I am having three children already.,那就錯了。但如果有位太太打電話給她先生問說 What are you doing? I’m having a cup of coffee with my friend.

I have/I’ve got a meeting. We are having a meeting. We are holding a meeting. The team members are having a meeting tomorrow.

More and more people are owning bikes. More and more people own bikes.

The house has a big (or large) garden. There’s a big (or large) traffic on the road next to the house. There’s a lot of traffic on the road next to the house.。

Buying a house is a very big decision. He’s my big brother. Anping Castle is a big tourist destination. She earns a lot of money, but she’s also a big spender. (她賺了很多錢,但她也是一個花錢闊綽的人);John is a big eater.

It’s no big deal. (那沒什麼了不起);She’s got a big mouth. (她是個大嘴巴);He’s too big for his boots.

Two of the escaped prisoners are still at large. (兩名逃犯仍逍遙法外);She’s larger than life. 此外,large 可與數量詞連用來表示「大量」的意思,但 big 大多不行,如 a large amount, on a large scale, a large number of, a large quantity of, a large proportion, to a large extent, a large percentage of, a large part of, a large volume 和 a large area 等。

(I’m partially, fairly, somewhat happy but not completely happy),但也可能意為「我十分/非常高興」(I’m totally, entirely, completely, 100% happy)。

當有人說 I am quite happy.

所以,如果我說 I am quite exhausted.

  • Mike: Are you feeling better now?
  • John: Yes, I’m feeling quite healthy, thank you. In fact, I feel great!

從上面的對話可知,由於 John 說 I feel great!

  • Mike: Are you feeling better now?
  • John: Well, I’m feeling quite healthy, but I still have a terrible headache.

I still have a terrible headache.

Q:”To be out is in.”

A:在這句中,out 和 in 都是形容詞。

在 1990 年代初期,out 開始被用做動詞,如 to out someone 意為告訴全世界某人 — 通常是公眾人物 — 是同性戀者,這裡的 out 就是 coming out of the closet, out of your cupboard 或 out of your house 的簡寫,也就是大家常聽到的「出櫃」的意思。 The boss has been outed.。

Quite a few British MPs have come out in parliament.

走筆至此,讀者應該知道 “To be out is in.”

Q:The criminal possessed three guns. Three guns were possessed by the criminal.

  • The red light means “Stop”.
“Stop” is meant by the red light.
  • She resembles her sister in appearance but not in character.
Her sister is resembled by her in appearance but not in character.

  • I didn’t quite catch your last point.
Your last point wasn’t quite caught by me.
  • She took me wrong.
I was taken wrong by her.

I was cost a lot of money by the house.

  • Some misfortune must have befallen them.
They must have been befallen by some misfortune.

Q:在 Considering its difficulty, John did very well to pass the exam.

A:根據 The New Fowler’s Modern English Usage 一書,這類介系詞叫做「邊緣介系詞」(marginal prepositions),亦即它們具有和一般介系詞 (如 at, in, from, by 等) 相同的語法功能,但型態卻與一般介系詞大異其趣。

雖然有些字典和英文用法書籍還列有「敢說」(make bold to say, venture to say) 的意思,但已不多見。 I (or We) daresay you’re right.

其實,更精確的說法是,dare 是個「半語氣助動詞」(marginal modal) — need, ought to 和 used to 也是屬於這類助動詞。

  • He dare not go out at night.
  • Daren’t you go out at night?
  • Dare you go home alone?
  • If you dare breathe a word about it to anyone, I’ll never speak to you again. (如果你敢將此事告訴任何人,我就再也不跟你講話了) (註:to breathe a word about/of it to anyone = to tell anyone about it)
  • I daren’t tell you any more, because it’s highly confidential.
  • No one dared do that again.
  • I dare not have gone to Taipei alone last year, but I think I dare now.

  • No one dares (to) speak freely about the political situation.
  • Did anyone dare to admit it?
  • They dare (to) answer these questions.
  • Do you dare (to) touch the snake?
  • They should not dare to go on strike.

  • How dare she take the exam without ever once coming to class?
  • How did she dare to take the exam without ever once coming to class?

  • I dared her to jump.
  • They dared me to spend a night in the graveyard.

Q:Especially men have this problem.

  • Married men and women, especially men, are likely to live longer than those who are not married.

  • Men, especially, have this problem.

  • Also men have this problem.
  • Men also have this problem.

  • Also, most women would agree.
= Furthermore, most women would agree.

The New York Times Manual of Style and Usage,ex- 是口語的用法,而 former 則用於正式場合。

Q:I would appreciate “it” if you would pay in cash. 和 I would appreciate if you would pay in cash.

這個動詞的主要意思有四:1.「鑑賞,欣賞,賞識」,如 appreciate good wine (欣賞好酒),wine appreciation (葡萄酒賞析);2.「瞭解,明白」(= understand, realize);3.「感激,感謝」(= be grateful or thankful for);4.「(財產、貨幣等) 增值,升值」,如 His house has appreciated considerably during the past six months. Do you appreciate our problem? I appreciate that you are disappointed by our failure to promote you.

另外,當 appreciate 意為「感激」時,亦有人反對其後直接接 how 或 that (但筆者認為應該還要再加上 if) 所引導的子句,如 Garner’s Modern American Usage 一書的作者 Bryan Garner 就是其中之一。 We appreciate how you’ve worked for the community. (我們對您為社區所做的事表示感激) 應改為 We are grateful for …。

「主詞 + would be grateful if 主詞 + would/could…」

  • I’d be most grateful if you could/would give me an interview.
= I’d much appreciate it if you could/would give me an interview.
= I’d be much obliged if you could/would give me an interview.

上句中的「主詞 + would be obliged if…」 I will appreciate it if …
