Expatiate (v.), expatriate (n., adj., v.)

He expatiated/dilated on/upon the main points of his thesis. (他闡述了他論文的重點);If there were time, I could expatiate/dilate on/upon the matter.

Kaohsiung has a small population of American expatriates. 當形容詞時,expatriate 意為「移居或旅居國外的」,如 expatriate Taiwanese (移居國外的台灣人);There are lots of expatriate artists, writers, and musicians living in Rome.

He was expatriated/banished/exiled by the government for political reasons. The Filipino workers have been repatriated.

Q:We are the best of friends. 和 We are best friends.

We are best friends. We are the best of friends.,這是「the + 形容詞最高級 + of + (the) 複數名詞」的句型,在這種結構中,複數名詞前面定冠詞之有無會影響句子的意思。

We are very/extremely good friends.

  • Mary is the wisest of women.
= Mary is a very/an extremely wise woman.
  • My grandma lives in the quietest of places.
= My grandma lives in a very/an extremely quiet place.
  • He has the most beautiful of gardens.
= He has a very/an extremely beautiful garden.

  • Mary is the wisest of the women (in that group).
= Mary is wiser than any other woman/all other women/the others (in that group).
  • My grandma lives in the quietest of the places (in Taipei).
= My grandma lives in a place which is quieter than any other place/all other places/the others (in Taipei).
  • He has the most beautiful of the gardens (in this community).
= His garden is more beautiful than any other garden/all other gardens/the others (in this community).

  • We must care about the poorest of the poor.
  • Bill Gates is the richest of the rich.
  • He is the strongest/weakest of the strong/weak.

The Richest of the Rich。

Adequate, enough, sufficient (adjs.)

We had adequate/enough/sufficient money for the journey.

Are there enough/sufficient bananas for everyone?

  • The pay was barely adequate to support a family.
  • His income is inadequate to pay for it.
  • We have enough chairs for everyone.
  • There were not enough seats for all the guests. The supply of seats was quite inadequate.
  • There was easily enough food for everyone.
  • There was a sufficient amount of food.
  • Ten thousand dollars will be sufficient for the trip.
  • Her income is not sufficient to support her family.
  • The food was insufficient for our needs.
  • He has adequate/enough/sufficient money for his son to study abroad.

queer

  • The college has no Queer Studies department nor any official queer studies program.

  • John’s a queer.

freaky

  • Man, that girl is freaky.

  • He’s a freaky guy.

  • That horror movie was freaky!
