Off of

A [= I] fall off of a tree.

The proof is in the pudding

“The proof is in the pudding” 以及更短的 “the proof of the pudding” 都是英文古諺 “the proof of the pudding is in the eating” 的簡寫。

根據《牛津英語大辭典》(The Oxford English Dictionary, OED),the proof of the pudding is in the eating 可追溯到 14 世紀初,而它首次出現在印刷品是在 1605 年。或許是這個成語太長、不容易記憶,現今所見到的大多是 the proof of the pudding 和 the proof is in the pudding 的寫法,尤其後者更具優勢,這可能是 the proof is in the pudding 比 the proof of the pudding 還要有意義一些。

Bad rap vs. bad rep

Jim has been getting sort of a bad rap recently. (吉姆最近一直受到某種無端的批評);Mark was sent up to the penitentiary on a bum rap.

That guy has a bad rep.

Expiration date, expiry date

  • Food product labels must specify weights, ingredients, nutritional content, and expiration date.
  • Never take any medication that is past its expiry date.
  • You need to enter the credit card number and expiry date.

Expiration date 和 expiry date 在食品、藥品或商品上通常被標示為 sell-by date, best-before date 或 use-by date 以及比較少見的 best-by date 或 use-before date。 之前」,與 before 同義,至於有無連字號,則無關宏旨,但 sell-by date, best-before date 和 use-by date 都有連字號。

Safe and sound

  • I’m glad to see you home safe and sound.
  • I’m glad to see you home save and sound.

See eye to eye 還是 see eyeball to eyeball 呢?

  • We have never seen eye to eye on this matter.
  • We have never seen eyeball to eyeball on this matter.

解說:see eye to eye (with someone) 意為「(與某人) 看法完全一致」;eyeball to eyeball 意為「面對面 (face to face)。 In the playoffs we go eyeball to eyeball with the Tigers. (在季後賽中,我們將對抗老虎隊);We are eyeball to eyeball with the enemy. 英文並無 see eyeball to eyeball 這樣的慣用語。
