Contemptible, contemptuous (adjs.)

contemptible 意為「可鄙的,卑劣的,卑鄙的」(despicable):That was a contemptible trick to play on a friend! (那是一種欺騙朋友的卑劣手段!);a contemptible liar (卑鄙的說謊者)。

Contemptuous 意為「表示輕蔑的;輕蔑的,輕視的,瞧不起的,鄙視的,藐視的」(scornful, full of contempt):He gave a contemptuous laugh. He has always been openly contemptuous of all authority. (他向來公然蔑視一切權威);The official was often contemptuous of public opinion. They glanced contemptuously at the other guests. (他們輕蔑地掃視著其他客人);She tossed her head contemptuously.

Accompany (v.)

The candidate was accompanied by six burly bodyguards. He was accompanied by his father. The salmon was accompanied with a delicious salad.

A skin rash may be accompanied with/by fever. (出疹子時可能會有發燒的現象);His speech was accompanied with/by gestures. The salmon was accompanied by a delicious salad. A delicious salad accompanied the salmon.。 His speech was accompanied with gestures. He accompanied his speech with gestures.。

The pianist accompanied her singing. (那位鋼琴家為她的歌唱伴奏);Her mother accompanied her on the piano.

Q:I don’t want there to be any misunderstanding.

I don’t want there to be any doubt about this.

I have dreamed of there being such a beautiful girlfriend.

Avenge (v.), revenge (n., v.), vengeance (n.)

He swore to avenge his brother. They avenged his death by burning the village. He resolved to avenge the insult on the boss.

He revenged himself on those who had killed his parents. (他向那些殺害他雙親的人進行報復);Tom wanted to revenge himself on John for his arrogance. avenge 亦可與反身代名詞連用來構成 avenge oneself on somebody (for something) 句型:They avenged themselves on their enemy. (他們向敵人報復);They began to avenge themselves on their neighbors for the years of suppression.

它們皆與 take 和 on 構成 take revenge/vengeance on somebody 句型:He swore to take revenge/vengeance on the people who had killed his sister. (他發誓要報復殺死他姊妹的人);The villagers seemed certain to take revenge/vengeance on the enemy. 然而,在 in revenge for something 這個片語中,revenge 不能用 vengeance 來替換,而在 with a vengeance 這個片語中,vengeance 亦不能用 revenge 來替換。in revenge for 意為「以報… He killed the man in revenge for the murder of his sister. The disease came back with a vengeance.

必須注意的是,get even 係接介系詞 with 再接報復的對象,而 retaliate (不及物動詞) 慣用的句型則是 retaliate against somebody for something。例如:I’d like to get even with the man who attacked my daughter. (我要向侵擾我女兒的那個男人報仇);They have threatened to retaliate against the US for the bombing raid. retaliate 的名詞 retaliation 亦很常見,其後若要接受詞 (報復對象) 也是先接 against;此外,它經常以 in retaliation for something (與 in revenge for 的結構相同) 的型態出現。例如:There is always the risk of possible retaliation against peacekeeping soldiers. (維和部隊總是面臨遭到報復的危險);The car bombings were apparently in retaliation for the arrest of the terrorists.

口語和非正式場合常用的成語 to throw in (or throw up) the sponge 係使用名詞 sponge 的字面意思,亦即「海綿」。 After years of fighting dishonesty in the government he threw in the towel at last and left politics. (他與政府內的不正之風鬥爭多年後,終於承認自己無能為力並退出政界);I hate my work. Sometimes I feel like throwing in the sponge.

Resource, recourse, resort (nn.)

My father is my main resource [recourse, resort] when I’m out of funds. (當我缺錢時,我父親是我的主要資源 [依靠]);Violence was our only resource/recourse/resort.

在 have recourse/resort to (依靠;訴諸於) 和 without recourse/resort to (不靠;不訴諸於) 等片語中,recourse 和 resort 是同義詞,不能用 resource 來代替。 The system allows doctors to have recourse to specialist opinion. (該制度使醫生能夠聽取專家的意見);We hope a settlement can be reached without recourse to legal action. They settled the dispute without recourse to violence. = They settled the dispute without resort to violence. = They settled the dispute without resorting to violence.

然而,在 as a last resort/resource (英式英語亦經常寫成 in the last resort) 中,resort 和 resource 可以互換,但卻不能用 recourse 來代替。as a last resort/resource As a/In the last resort, we could borrow more money from the bank. (作為最後手段,我們可以向銀行再借些錢);The government will impose a state of emergency only as a last resort. There are many summer resorts in the mountains. (山裡有許多避暑勝地);a ski/skiing resort (滑雪勝地);a seaside resort (海濱度假勝地);a health resort (療養地);a resort island/town (度假島/度假城)。

Oration, address, discourse, lecture, speech, talk (nn.)

He gave the funeral oration. I heard the professor’s discourse on English lexicography. (我聽了教授所作的關於英語辭典學的演講);Her discourse was devoted to the perils and pleasures of trailer travel. Professor Lee will give us a lecture on poetry.

We read Washington’s Farewell Address and Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. State of the Union address。speech 泛指各種演說,只要是 public speaking,不管正式或非正式,也不管什麼主題,更不管何種聽眾,都可以叫做 speech:The chairman made an opening speech. (主席致開幕詞);I gave them a short speech on what they could expect of me. (陳教授作了一項有關美國戲劇的演講);The coach gave them a rousing talk at the half.

Admission, admittance (nn.)

例如,to be granted admittance 是「獲准或被允許進入某地」,而 to be granted admission 則是「獲准或被允許加入某組織、團體或機構」。 He made no admission of guilt.

He was denied admittance to the courtroom. (他被拒絕進入法庭),而 admission 應僅用來指獲准加入某組織、團體或機構 — 通常與介系詞 to 連用,如 her admission to the club (她加入該俱樂部);China’s admission to the United Nations (中國加入聯合國);She has the qualifications for admission to the college. No admission to the park between 11 pm and 6 am. The admission to the movie was five dollars. (這場電影的入場費為 5 美元);Admission to the game is free.

Alternate, alternative (adjs., nn.)

They saw each other on alternate Sundays. (他們每隔一個星期天相會一次);According to the weather forecast, there will be a week of alternate rain and sunshine. She was appointed an alternate, not a full delegate. (她被任命為代理代表,而非正式代表);We have several alternates on our team.

We are now looking for an alternative venue. They gave us an alternate [alternative] plan/suggestion. He goes to an alternative school. (他就讀非正統學校);She likes to listen to alternative music. (她喜歡聽另類音樂);This is an alternative medicine/remedy. There was no alternative but to close the road until July.

She offered me several alternatives, not one of them really pleasant. There were originally two alternatives, but this latest offer now gives us three options.

最後要提的是,alternate 亦可當動詞用,意為「交替;更迭;輪流」,通常與介系詞 with 連用,但有時也跟 between連用:Wet days alternated with dry ones. (雨季與旱季交替出現);His mood alternates between joy and despair.

Important (adj.), importantly (adv.), more/most important (adj.), more/most importantly (adv.)

Important 這個形容詞與介系詞連用時,通常接for, in 或 to:Winning the game yesterday was important for the team’s morale. (贏得昨天那場比賽對鼓舞全隊的士氣至關重要);Information and support are important in helping people deal with swine flu. (資訊和支援對幫助人們對抗豬流感是很重要的);Your interest and support are important to your child.

It is important to learn to communicate. (學會溝通很重要);It’s important that he (should) learn to read. (他學會閱讀是很重要的) — 「It + be 動詞 + essential, important, necessary, vital 等形容詞 + that + S (should) V…」 It is important that he be sent there at once. She was the most important of all the contestants.

無論是形容詞 more/most important 還是副詞 more/most importantly 都可當句子副詞 (sentence adverb),且都是標準用法:More [Most] important [importantly], we now have the right answer.
