Divorce (v., n.), divorced (adj.), divorcé, divorcée (nn.)

Last year he was divorced by his wife. Last year he was divorced from his wife. Last year he divorced his wife.

與 to get married (get + 形容詞 married) 比 to marry 還要常用的情況一樣,to get divorced 也比 to divorce 來得常用,如 After they got divorced, she never remarried. Mary and Tom are getting divorced. (瑪麗和湯姆要離婚了 — 兩人都打算結束他們的婚姻);Mary is getting divorced (from Tom).

There has been a big increase in the number of divorces in recent years. 它所構成的兩個片語頗為常用:一為 to get a divorce (= to divorce),如 She wants to get a divorce. Mary is getting divorced (from Tom). Mary is getting a divorce (from Tom).;另一為 to end in divorce,如 Both of her marriages ended in divorce.

Divorcé 和 divorcée 分別用來指「離婚的男子」(a divorced man) 和「離婚的女子」(a divorced woman)。

Prejudice (n., v.), prejudiced (adj.), prejudicial (adj.)

當動詞用的 prejudice 意為「使抱偏見,使懷成見」,幾乎都是與直接受詞或反身代名詞連用,其後再接 against, toward(s) 或 in favor of — 但接 in favor of 的情況非常罕見:His nagging prejudiced the children against [toward(s)] him. (他的嘮叨使孩子們對他懷有成見);His unfortunate experience prejudiced himself against [in favor of] all lawyers. I don’t want to prejudice your chances in any way.

Her prejudices against [toward(s), in favor of] Italian cooking are well known. The attorney argued that the decision involved prejudice to his client. (律師論辯說這一裁決侵害了他的委託人);We accept this interim settlement, without prejudice to our claim for a full settlement later on.

其後若接介系詞,通常接 against:His reporting was clearly based and prejudiced against the homeless. Prejudicial 意為「不利的,有害的:引起偏見的」,通常接介系詞 to,但有時接 toward(s):Too much smoking is prejudicial to health. (抽太多菸對健康有害);Her remarks were openly prejudicial toward(s) foreigners.

Affinity (n.)

如果兩個朋友投緣 (an affinity between two friends),那麼這就表示其中一人喜愛另一人 (One has an affinity for the other)嗎? affinity 這個名詞有多個意思,從「姻親關係;密切關係」到「(語言、生物等之間的) 雷同,類似;相像,相似」並延伸為「吸引力;情投意合;喜愛,喜好」乃至於「(化學的) 親和力;親和性 (促使微粒之間結合的相互吸引力)」。

She feels a natural affinity for him. He feels a close affinity to (or with) his sister. There is a close affinity between/among his old neighborhood and the people who once lived there.

I have an affinity for people in their situation. Lamb has a distinct affinity for red wines. 在化學的文章中,for 也是必選的介系詞:the blood’s affinity for oxygen (血液對氧的親和力);a dye with an affinity for synthetic fabrics (對合成纖維織物具有親和性的染料)。

Her affinity for living in Kaohsiung led her to reject a chance to return to Taipei.

Center (v.)

傳統上,center 這個動詞一直與介系詞 on, upon, in 或 at 連用。

Our hope centered in the young leader. (我們的希望繫於這位年輕領導人身上);His whole attention was centered on this matter. (他的全部注意力都集中在此事上);The trade is centered at Amsterdam. A storm of controversy centered around the king. 為中心,繞著轉):Their troubles revolve around money management.

Bereave

的」(stripped of, robbed of, deprived of),通常與抽象名詞連用:He was bereft of friends, money, and purpose. (他失去了朋友、金錢和意志);He was bereft of all hope. Bereaved 的意思比較專門,意為「痛失親人的;死者親人的」,僅用來指痛失 (死去的) 至親好友:a bereaved mother (痛失小孩的母親);He was bereaved (of his wife.)

The bereaved was/were grief-stricken. She runs a group that helps people deal with bereavement. (她主持一個助人度過喪親之痛的團體);a series of bereavements (連連痛失親人)。

Visit, visitation (nn.) / visit, visit with (vv.)

當名詞用的 visit 通常與介系詞 to 連用,而 visitation 通常與 of 連用,如 “pay a visit to” (= to visit, to call on, to pay a call on) 為一常用的片語。例如:Their visits are usually quite short. (他們的訪問通常都相當短暫);The president arrived in Japan today for a three-day visit. (總統今天抵達日本進行為期三天的訪問);Few people enjoy a visit to the dentist. (很少有人喜歡去看牙醫);I must pay a visit to the doctor. (我必須去看醫生);the visitation of the sick (對病人的探望)。

Visitation 也是個法律用語,指「(離婚父母對孩子的) 探視 (權)」:a visitation arrangement (探視安排);He had rights of visitation to see his children. They believed the plague was a visitation of God. The next day we received another visitation from the police. The Queen will make a state visit to Far East next year.

當動詞用的 visit,意思與名詞相當,但 to visit with 的意思則與 to visit 大相逕庭;不僅如此,visit with 本身就有兩個截然不同的意思,一為「暫住」(= to stay with),另一為「與… 聊天」(= to converse with, to chat with):Aunt Huang is visiting with us this weekend. (黃大嬸這個週末將來我們家裡住);Amy will come down and visit with you for a couple of days. (艾美會來你這兒作客住上幾天);I visited with her mother for nearly an hour. (我跟她媽媽聊了近一個鐘頭);I saw him visiting with a neighbor.

Means

His means are more than adequate. 這意思的 means 有幾個常用的片語或成語:have the means to do something (有錢做某事),如 Small businesses don’t have the means to develop a sophisticated Internet presence. He is living beyond his means. (他入不敷出);according to one’s means (根據某人的財力),如 You are invited to contribute according to your means. (請依您的財力捐款);a man/woman of means (富有的男子/女子),如 He had the well-dressed appearance of a man of means.

The best means of securing the cooperation of the builders is to appeal to their self-interest. (確保建商合作的最好方法是迎合他們自身的利益);The most effective means for dealing with the drug problem have generally been those suggested by the affected communities.

意為「方法;手段」時,means 最常接 of,但接 for, to, toward 的情況亦不時會見到,而這些介系詞後面再接名詞或動名詞:a means of noise reduction (降低噪音的方法),a means for transmitting signals (傳送信號的方法),a means to an end (達到目的的方法),a means toward achieving social equality (獲致社會平等的手段)。

這意思的 means 有幾個常用的片語或成語,其中之一就是 a means to an end (= a way to an end),如 I gave him a bicycle as a means to an end: I want him to take more exercise. 其他常用片語或成語還有:by means of (使用,應用;藉由),We express our thoughts by means of words. (我們用言詞來表達思想);by no means/not by any means (= not at all) (絕不,一點都不),如 It is by no means certain. (一點都不確定);by all means (= certainly; please do) (當然可以;好的),如 “Do you mind if I invite a few friends?” “By all means.”

Identify

Most young readers identified (or identified themselves) with the heroine of the novel.

Reading the book, I find it hard to identify (or identify myself) with the main character/with the main character’s struggle. He identified the dead woman as his wife. (他認出死者是他的太太);He identified the wallet as his.

Relation, relative (nn.) / relative to, relating to (preps.)

He had no other near/close relatives. 和 He had no other near/close relations. She’s a relative [relation] of mine. She’s no relation to me.

在 “She’s no relation to me.” We have a report relative to [relating to, concerning, about] trends in the economy.

Plus

One plus one equals two. The strong wind, plus heavy rain, has caused many power outages.

The growing unemployment plus [and] the oil price increase have unsettled the stock market. I don’t have time to go with you, plus I don’t have any money either. You can get the knife, the bowl, and the book for NT$200. Plus you get the free knife sharpener.

外」(= in addition to) 的說法並不表苟同。 Plus their intelligence, their strength makes them formidable. Chips and beans is her favorite appetizer.

She hates to go there. Plus it’s raining. His experience in social work is a plus factor. His new job has several pluses, one of which is a large salary.
