Drunk, drunken (adjs.)

He got drunk on only two glasses of wine. (他才喝了兩杯葡萄酒就醉了);He got dead drunk on only two cans of beer. (他才喝了兩罐啤酒就爛醉如泥);There was a drunken man lying on the ground. drunk 經常與其他字連用來構成固定搭配,如 blind/dead/roaring drunk, drunk as a skunk/lord,這幾個片語均意為「酩酊大醉,爛醉如泥」(= very drunk),如 He is blind/dead drunk./He is drunk as a skunk.

John is drunk with power. (約翰醉心於權力);He was drunk with success. (他陶醉於成功中);She felt drunk with rage. My uncle had a drunken sleep. (我叔叔喝醉後呼呼大睡);He collapsed in a drunken stupor. (他醉得不省人事而倒在地上);a drunken brawl/rage (酒後鬧事/狂怒)。 The police charged him with being drunk and disorderly.

He was usually drunken and foul-mouthed. He was arrested for/charged with DWI. DUI (driving under the influence)。

Disinterested, uninterested (adjs.)

She doesn’t read newspapers and is uninterested in politics. (她不看報紙,對政治也不感興趣);I’m completely uninterested in soccer.

The counselor gave us some disinterested advice. (這位顧問給了我們一些不偏頗的忠告);a disinterested witness and observer (公正的證人和目擊者);Charles was disinterested in math.

A judge must be disinterested in the cases he tries. (法官審判案件必須公正)、I like music but am disinterested in art. He has a disinterested manner.

Discrepancy, disparity (nn.)

discrepancy 意為「差異,不同,不一致;不一致或不相符之處」(difference, lack of similarity or agreement, inconsistency),可當可數或不可數名詞用,後面通常接介系詞 between 或 in,如 There is some discrepancy between their two descriptions. (他們兩人的描述有些出入);There was a discrepancy in the two reports of the accident. (關於那起事故的兩份報導有矛盾之處);There were some discrepancies in the statement he gave to the police.

Disparity 意為「差異,不同,不等,不一致;懸殊」,通常是指重大的差異,不相等,顯著的不同或根本不同 (important difference, inequality, something incongruous, markedly distinct, or fundamentally different),同樣可當可數或不可數名詞用,而後面亦通常接介系詞 between 或 in,如 The disparity between their proposals made compromise unlikely. (他們的提案差很大,使得尋求折衷變得不可能);There is still a disparity in salaries among people doing the same job. (同工不同酬的情況仍然存在);There is (a) considerable disparity in the rates of pay for men and women.

(1) Rather than cause trouble, he left. (他不願惹麻煩,寧可離去);(2) She made students think for themselves, rather than telling them what to think. (她讓學生獨立思考,而不是告訴他們怎麼思考);(3) The job will take months rather than weeks.

A:當 rather than (= but not,意為「而不是;不是 … He ran rather than walked. (他不是在走而是在跑),You are doing this for yourself rather than for others. The Oxford Dictionary of American Usage and Style Rather than staying home on a Saturday night, we went out to six different bars.

  • I decided to stay at home rather than (to) go/going to the cinema.

Rather than causing trouble, he left.,而上面提到的 Oxford Dictionary 中的句子也可寫成 Rather than stay home on a Saturday night, we went out to six different bars.

  • Rather than criticize/criticizing your husband, why not find out if there’s something wrong?

  • The teacher rather than the students is to blame.

I’ll be back in an hour. 這句中,in an hour 是 within an hour 還是 after an hour 呢?

  • My boss thought it would take longer, but I completed the report in half an hour (半小時內;不到半小時) yesterday afternoon.
  • He wrote the novel in six weeks (六週內;不到六週的時間) last summer when he was on holiday in Japan.

如果是未來的情況,那麼 in an hour 的意思通常是「一小時後 (after an hour)」。此外,我們常見的一種類似的時間表示法或寫法,如 in an hour’s time, in three days’ time 等等,它們的意思就相當於用在未來情況的 in an hour, in three days 等等,不過後者的寫法比較簡單:

  • It’ll be ready in about half an hour
  • It’ll be ready in half an hour’s time.
  • It won’t be ready for half an hour.
  • I’ll see you again in six months
  • I’ll see you again in six months’ time.
  • I shan’t see you again for six months.

在肯定句中,for 通常表示動作或事件持續的時間,所以 in an hour 跟 for an hour 的意思是不同的。

  • He learnt English in three weeks.
  • He learnt English for three weeks.
  • It’s two o’clock; I’ll come in an hour.
  • It’s two o’clock; I’ll come for an hour.

I purchased two dozens of pencils.

Complaints came the next morning by the dozens. (翌晨有很多人投訴);Dozens of people came to see me. (許多人來看我);I have been to dozens of countries.

Send me three dozen eggs. (給我送3打蛋);I paid eight dozen dollars for that pen. I purchased two dozens of pencils. I purchased two dozen of pencils.

然而,當 of 後面的受詞為代名詞或特指的名詞時 (所謂特指的名詞,就是名詞的前面加上 the, that, this, these, those 或所有格,如 my, John’s 等等。

  • Three dozen of them went to the U.S.
  • Two dozen of these cups were broken.
  • Eight dozen of his troops were killed.
  • More than one dozen of those apples have taken away.

Born, borne (past participle, adj.)

He was born in Japan. (他在日本出生);The twins were born on February 15, 1969. (這對雙胞胎生於 1969 年 2 月 15 日);The baby was born to a very young woman. (這嬰兒是一位年紀非常輕的女子所生);Amy was born into a large/wealthy family. She was considered a born movie star. (她被視為天生的電影明星);He is a born leader/writer. (他是天生領袖/天才作家);She was born to succeed. 注意:當 born 意為「出生的」時,be born to 後接名詞或名詞片語 (to 為介系詞),而當 born 意為「命中注定的」時,be born to 後接原形動詞 (to 為不定詞)。

The woman has borne three sons. (這位女人已生了三個兒子),She had borne six children. The baby was born to a very young woman. The baby was borne to a very young woman.。

He has borne a grudge for many years. (他已懷恨多年);They had borne enough pain. (他們已忍受了過多的痛苦);The prisoner’s story was borne out by his wife. (那囚犯的供述為他的妻子所證實);The following points should be borne in mind. to bear out 和 bear in mind 都是常用的片語,前者意為「證實,為… Slowly it was borne in on the citizens that the enemy had surrounded them. (市民漸漸意識到敵人已經包圍了他們);Some plants have windborne seeds. (有些植物靠風傳播種子);Malaria is a mosquito-borne disease. (瘧疾是由蚊子傳播的疾病);airborne pollution (空氣傳播的污染);airborne supply (空中補給);airborne troops ( 空降部隊)。

Definite, definitive (adjs.), definitely, definitively (advs.)

There’s a definite link between smoking and some types of cancer. (抽菸和某些種類的癌症肯定有關連);We demand a definite answer. (我們要求一個明確的答覆);We haven’t arranged a definite date for our visit yet. (我們尚未安排一個確切的訪問日期);definite article (定冠詞)。 Mary was very definite about (= very clear about) her intention to travel the world.

The Supreme Court made a definitive decision. (最高法院作出了最後的判決);After some thought, he gave us a definitive answer. 此外,definitive 還意為「最完整可靠的;最好的;權威的」(the most nearly complete, better than all others, authoritative),通常用來形容作品或表演,如 She’s written the definitive biography (or definitive life) of Abraham Lincoln. This little book is the definitive travel guide to Taiwan.

definitely 意為「肯定地;當然;明確地」,如 He is definitely coming. (他一定會來);I cannot say definitely until I see John. The Supreme Court’s decision solved the problems definitively.

Adverse, averse (adjs.)

(逆風使船隻受阻);The drug has so far had no adverse effect on patients. The judgment was adverse to the defendant.

I would not be averse to taking a drink now and then. (我不反對偶爾喝一杯);He was averse to entering the contest.

We are now in adverse conditions. (我們目前處於逆境);The expedition encountered adverse weather conditions. (探險隊遇到了不利的氣候條件);The proposal has attracted a lot of adverse comment. (這項建議招來許多非難);The policy has attracted a lot of adverse criticism. (這項政策招來許多不利的批評);These working conditions are adverse to efficiency.

Averse 大多用在否定結構中,通常指人,且不可放在它所修飾的名詞前面,其後可接介系詞 to 和 from,但現代的用法幾乎都是接 to:Her father is not averse to using violence. (她父親不反對使用暴力);I don’t smoke cigarettes, but I’m not averse to (having) the occasional cigar. (我不抽菸,但我不反對偶爾抽一支雪茄);As an investor I’m averse to risk-taking.

Consequent, consequential (adj.)

Competition in the market has led to goods being produced cheaply and a consequent deterioration in quality. (市場的競爭已導致商品的廉價生產,隨之品質也下降了);She was knocked down by a truck and her consequent injuries left her a permanent invalid. (她被卡車撞倒,而因此造成的傷害使她終生殘廢);consequential loss/damage (間接損失/損害)。

The rise in price was consequent on/to the failure of the crops. (物價上漲是由收成不好所引起的);Severe flooding was consequent on/to the heavy rains. They’ve increased the number of staff and consequently the service is better.

Consequential 除了上述意思外,也意為「重要的,意義重大的」(important, significant),可以指事物也可指人,其反義詞為 inconsequential,意為「不重要的;無足輕重的;微不足道的」(unimportant, insignificant):He made a consequential decision. (他作了一項意義重大的決定);an inconsequential event (無關緊要的事件);an inconsequential detail (微不足道的細節)。 He is a consequential little man.
