Materialize

They watched in horror as Mary’s ghost materialized before their very eyes. Mr. Lee materialized his dream in a plot of orchard land in Taitung.

No sooner had we set the menu down than a waiter materialized at our table. The promised subsidies never materialized. (獲允諾的補貼從未落實);It was generally thought the community would oppose the measure, but no new objections materialized.

Center (v.)

傳統上,center 這個動詞一直與介系詞 on, upon, in 或 at 連用。

Our hope centered in the young leader. (我們的希望繫於這位年輕領導人身上);His whole attention was centered on this matter. (他的全部注意力都集中在此事上);The trade is centered at Amsterdam. A storm of controversy centered around the king. 為中心,繞著轉):Their troubles revolve around money management.

Act, action (nn.) / action (v.)

They deeply appreciated his generous action [act].

(恐怖活動已告增加);It was an act of terrorism.

同樣地,在下面的慣用語或固定片語中,act 和 action 皆不可互換:to catch sb in the act (of doing sth) (發現某人正在做某事 [通常指壞事] ) — I caught him in the act of reading my private letters. (他正在看我的私人信件時,被我當場發現了);act of bravery/cruelty/kindness/mercy/terrorism/vandalism/violence 等 (勇敢/殘忍/仁慈/寬恕/恐怖/破壞 [公物] /暴力行為) — No act of kindness is ever wasted. (善有善報);to put on an act (裝腔作勢) — He’s just putting on an act. (他只是裝腔作勢罷了);Would you tell us something about the new Education Act? to take action (採取行動) — We urge the authorities to take action. (我們敦促當局採取行動);Twenty strikers voted to suspend their action (= industrial action). (20名罷工者投票表決暫停罷工行動);Finally she had to file an action (= legal action) for divorce. (最後她只好提出離婚訴訟);killed/wounded/missing in action (戰鬥中死亡/受傷/失蹤) — a list of soldiers missing in action (戰鬥中失蹤士兵的名單);Actions speak louder than words. 此外,口語或非正式場合常見的 “to go [or be] where the action is” 和 “to want a piece of the action” 也只能使用 action,不可用 act。 John wants to go where the action is. I want a piece of the action. (算我一份),Everyone in the family wanted a piece of the action as they tried to bag the prize.

Action 還可當動詞用,為一商業和行政方面的術語,意思是「就某事或依照、按照某事採取行動;使某事付諸實施」(take action on sth, put sth into action):Action this report (依照這份報告採取行動);action things (= do things) (做事情)。

east, East, easterly, Eastern (adjs., nn.), eastern (adj.)

She took the next plane back to the East this morning. He has traveled extensively in the East. (他已遊遍亞洲國家);East-West relations (東西方的關係)。

The sun rises in the east. We sailed on an eastern course. We sailed in an easterly direction. eastern 的方向雖不若 east 來得明確,但卻比 east 來得常用,如 the eastern shore (東部海岸);in eastern Taiwan (在台灣東部)。

easterly 當名詞用時意為來自東邊的氣流或從東邊吹來的風 (東風):There were strong easterlies last night.

Author, coauthor (vv.)

The Senator authored a bill to help the unemployed.

Coauthor 在科學和學術出版品中是個已被認可或者說它的用法已告確立的動詞,如 coauthored by A and B (由 A 和 B 合著)。

Salary increment, bonus, COLA, raise, rise (nn.) / raise, rise (vv.) / raise, bring up, rear (vv.) / rise, arise, get up (vv.)

中文的「加薪」,英文可以叫做 salary increment, pay increase, pay rise, pay raise, rise in pay, raise in pay, rise in salary, raise in salary, rise, raise 等等,其中 rise 及其所構成的用語是英式英語,而 raise 及其所構成的用語是美式英語,如 She gave her employees large rises/raises last year.

cost-of-living 是形容詞,生活費的名詞是 the cost of living。

The sun has not yet risen. (太陽還沒升起);Prices have risen again this month. They are going to raise funds for the school buildings.

He rose [arose, got up] to object. She has a habit of rising [arising, getting up] early.

Bereave

的」(stripped of, robbed of, deprived of),通常與抽象名詞連用:He was bereft of friends, money, and purpose. (他失去了朋友、金錢和意志);He was bereft of all hope. Bereaved 的意思比較專門,意為「痛失親人的;死者親人的」,僅用來指痛失 (死去的) 至親好友:a bereaved mother (痛失小孩的母親);He was bereaved (of his wife.)

The bereaved was/were grief-stricken. She runs a group that helps people deal with bereavement. (她主持一個助人度過喪親之痛的團體);a series of bereavements (連連痛失親人)。

Debut

He debuted at Carnegie Hall in New York in 1994. The company will debut the new six-cylinder convertible in July. (這家公司將在7月首次推出6汽缸的敞蓬車);The national edition of the newspaper debuted last month.

然而,現今這項用法在大多數的書面英語和口語中都是標準用法,顯然是因為動詞比當名詞用的 debut 所構成的片語 to have one’s debut 或 to make one’s debut 來得簡潔 — She made her debut at a small opera house in Germany in 2001. Her new series will debut next March on the network television. (她的新影集將在明年3月首次在這家電視網播出);The network will debut her new series next March. His debut novel has already sold over one million copies.
