Staff (adj., n., v.), staffer (n.)

The flag was flown at half-staff.

The general’s staff agree [agrees] on the new strategy. The refugee center is staffed mainly by/with volunteers. (難民中心主要由志工提供服務);Hire more cooks, until you have staffed the kitchen fully. 至於在 Smith isn’t line; he’s staff.

He is a White House staffer.

Relation, relative (nn.) / relative to, relating to (preps.)

He had no other near/close relatives. 和 He had no other near/close relations. She’s a relative [relation] of mine. She’s no relation to me.

在 “She’s no relation to me.” We have a report relative to [relating to, concerning, about] trends in the economy.

Jibe (vv.), gibe, gybe (nn., vv.)

My view jibes with yours on the issue.

Gibe 是個動詞,通常與 at 連用,意為「嘲笑;嘲弄;揶揄」(to taunt, to deride, to jeer),如 The spectators gibed at him mercilessly when he struck out. (當他被三振時,觀眾毫不留情地嘲笑他);當名詞用的 gibe 意為「嘲笑;譏笑;奚落」(a taunt),如 She ignored any gibes.

Obligated, obliged (adjs.), obligate, oblige (vv.)

He felt obligated [obliged] to visit his parents. By loaning them the money she obligated [obliged] them to make a series of repayments. oblige 也可當不及物動詞,意為「幫忙;施恩惠於」(= do someone a favor):They asked for more time, and I obliged and gave them some.

Obligated 和 obliged 大多以 be/feel obligated/obliged to do something 的型態出現,如上述意為「有義務/有責任做某事」:Employers are legally obligated [obliged] to pay the minimum wage. 此外,obligated 還用於 be/feel obligated to someone (注意:to 是介系詞) 這個片語中,意為「感激某人」: I was obligated to her for her help. 然而,其前若用副詞加強語 much 來修飾,則慣用字變成 obliged 而非 obligated:I’m much obliged to you. (我非常感謝您);尤其是在 “I would be obliged if …”

I’d be much obliged if you could/would give me an interview.
= I’d much appreciate it if you could/would give me an interview.
= I’d be most grateful if you could/would give me an interview.

Plus

One plus one equals two. The strong wind, plus heavy rain, has caused many power outages.

The growing unemployment plus [and] the oil price increase have unsettled the stock market. I don’t have time to go with you, plus I don’t have any money either. You can get the knife, the bowl, and the book for NT$200. Plus you get the free knife sharpener.

外」(= in addition to) 的說法並不表苟同。 Plus their intelligence, their strength makes them formidable. Chips and beans is her favorite appetizer.

She hates to go there. Plus it’s raining. His experience in social work is a plus factor. His new job has several pluses, one of which is a large salary.

Scissors

Scissors 可以是單數或複數:This scissors is 或 these scissors are 都可以指單一把剪刀。 由於剪刀是由兩個刀片所構成,these scissors 可能指單一把剪刀,所以為了避免語意不清,最好使用量詞 pair of 來表示一把,pairs of 來表示多把:this pair of scissors is;these pairs of scissors are. 必須注意的是,當有形容詞要修飾這些名詞時,該形容詞是位在 pair 之前,而不是直接放在這些名詞之前,如 a new pair of scissors (一把新剪刀) (非 a pair of new scissors);two red pairs of underpants (兩條紅內褲)。

Glimpse, glance

當名詞時,它們通常跟不同的介系詞連用,glimpse 是與 of 連用,而 glance 通常接 at:I got/had a glimpse of her. (我看了她一眼);I took/had a glance at her.

They glimpsed a village through the trees. He glimpsed at my new watch and said it was a good bargain. He glanced at the envelope and recognized his uncle’s handwriting. (他瞥了一眼那個信封,認出是他叔叔的筆跡);The bullet glanced off the tree and went through the window.
