Visit, visitation (nn.) / visit, visit with (vv.)

Visit 和 visitation 的意思不盡相同。visit 意為「拜訪,訪問;參觀,遊覽;(政要或公務員) 視察,巡視,訪問;(病人) 就診,(醫生) 出診」,僅單純地表示「拜訪某人或參觀某地」,而 visitation 意為「訪問;參觀;探視,探望」,是指某種正式的 visit。當名詞用的 visit 通常與介系詞 to 連用,而 visitation 通常與 of 連用,如 “pay a visit to” (= to visit, to call on, to pay a call on) 為一常用的片語。例如:Their visits are usually quite short. (他們的訪問通常都相當短暫);The president arrived in Japan today for a three-day visit. (總統今天抵達日本進行為期三天的訪問);Few people enjoy a visit to the dentist. (很少有人喜歡去看牙醫);I must pay a visit to the doctor. (我必須去看醫生);the visitation of the sick (對病人的探望)。

Visitation 也是個法律用語,指「(離婚父母對孩子的) 探視 (權)」:a visitation arrangement (探視安排);He had rights of visitation to see his children. (他有探視他小孩的權利)。此外,visitation 還意為「天譴;天罰」:They believed the plague was a visitation of God. (他們認為這場瘟疫是上帝的懲罰);再者,在口語中,visitation 意為「令人討厭的停留過久的訪問;不受歡迎的訪問」 — 經常與 from 連用:The next day we received another visitation from the police. (第二天警察又來詢問我們)。這三個意思都是 visit 所沒有的。然而,儘管 visitation 指的是某種正式的訪問,但國與國之間政要和官員的正式訪問卻是 state visit,這個英文新聞常見的固定用語意為「國事訪問」:The Queen will make a state visit to Far East next year. (女王明年將到遠東進行國事訪問)。

當動詞用的 visit,意思與名詞相當,但 to visit with 的意思則與 to visit 大相逕庭;不僅如此,visit with 本身就有兩個截然不同的意思,一為「暫住」(= to stay with),另一為「與…談話,與…聊天」(= to converse with, to chat with):Aunt Huang is visiting with us this weekend. (黃大嬸這個週末將來我們家裡住);Amy will come down and visit with you for a couple of days. (艾美會來你這兒作客住上幾天);I visited with her mother for nearly an hour. (我跟她媽媽聊了近一個鐘頭);I saw him visiting with a neighbor. (我看到他在和鄰居閒聊)。visit with 的這兩個意思都是美式英語的用法。

Stay, stop, stop by (vv.)

Please stop by [at] the cleaner’s to see if my suit is ready. (請在乾洗店停下來看看我的西裝洗好了沒)。美國人在邀訪時也常用 stop by 和 stop in:Why don’t you stop by (my house) on your way home? (你為什麼回家時不順路來 [我家] 坐一坐?)。由此可知,stop by, stop at, stop in 在意為「順道造訪,作短暫訪問」時是同義詞,且其後若接受詞,須接某人的家 (someone’s house or home),亦即接地點,而不是接人。stop in 在英國的意思是「留在家裡;待在家裡」;在美國,這叫做 stay in。

Stay 的「留宿,過夜」意思在英美的用法大致相同;住在旅館用 stay at,而住在朋友或其他人家裡則用 stay with:We’re staying at a hotel. (我們住在一家旅館裡);My mother is staying with us this week. (我母親這星期來我們家住)。此外,stay the night 和 stay overnight 這兩個片語也常被用來表示「留宿,過夜」的意思;在英國,stay the night 也叫做 stop the night:Dad could stay the night. (爸爸可以留下來過夜);I stopped the night with my brother.

Means

當 means 意為「金錢;財產,財力;收入」時是個複數名詞,要接複數動詞:His means are more than adequate. (他的財力雄厚)。這意思的 means 有幾個常用的片語或成語:have the means to do something (有錢做某事),如 Small businesses don’t have the means to develop a sophisticated Internet presence. (小型企業沒有財力發展精緻的網際網路平台);beyond/within one’s means (超過某人的財力;某人的財力無法負擔/在某人的財力範圍內;某人的財力能夠負擔),如 He is living beyond his means. (他入不敷出);according to one’s means (根據某人的財力),如 You are invited to contribute according to your means. (請依您的財力捐款);a man/woman of means (富有的男子/女子),如 He had the well-dressed appearance of a man of means. (他穿著體面,像個有錢人)。

當 means 意為「方法;手段」時是單複數同型,可接單數或複數動詞:The best means of securing the cooperation of the builders is to appeal to their self-interest. (確保建商合作的最好方法是迎合他們自身的利益);The most effective means for dealing with the drug problem have generally been those suggested by the affected communities. (處理毒品問題最有效的方法通常就是受影響社區所提出的方法)。

意為「方法;手段」時,means 最常接 of,但接 for, to, toward 的情況亦不時會見到,而這些介系詞後面再接名詞或動名詞:a means of noise reduction (降低噪音的方法),a means for transmitting signals (傳送信號的方法),a means to an end (達到目的的方法),a means toward achieving social equality (獲致社會平等的手段)。

這意思的 means 有幾個常用的片語或成語,其中之一就是 a means to an end (= a way to an end),如 I gave him a bicycle as a means to an end: I want him to take more exercise. (我給他一輛腳踏車作為一種要他多運動的手段)。其他常用片語或成語還有:by means of (使用,應用;藉由),We express our thoughts by means of words. (我們用言詞來表達思想);by no means/not by any means (= not at all) (絕不,一點都不),如 It is by no means certain. (一點都不確定);by all means (= certainly; please do) (當然可以;好的),如 “Do you mind if I invite a few friends?” “By all means.” (我邀請幾個朋友可以嗎?) (當然可以)。

Magic (adj., n.), magical (adj.)

Her sudden appearance was really magic [magical]. (她的突然現身真是不可思議);That was a truly magic moment.

She has a magic touch with the baby; he never cries when she’s holding him. (她的手像有魔法似的,這嬰兒由她抱著都不會哭) — to have a magic touch 意為「有解決難題的長才」(比喻用法);Diamonds were once thought to have magical powers. (鑽石一度被認為具有魔力)。

然而,在一些固定的用語中,magic 和 magical 不能互換,如我們不能用 magical 來代替 a magic carpet,a magic bullet 和 a magic wand 等片語中的 magic。此外,magic 還可用在非正式場合或口語中來表示「很好,很棒」(very good, wonderful) 的意思,而這意思是 magical 所沒有的:The party was magic! (聚會辦得太好了)。

Masterful, masterly

有些人一直將 masterful 和 masterly 視為兩個意思不同的字。他們認為 masterful 應僅意為「善於控制人/情勢的,對情況瞭如指掌的;專橫的,跋扈的」,如 She spoke to me in a masterful voice. (她用專橫的口氣對我說話),而 masterly 應僅意為「熟練的;精湛的;巧妙的」(skillful, adroit, expert),如 a masterly performance of the sonata (精湛的奏鳴曲演奏)。

His control of English was quite masterful [masterly]. (他對英文的掌控相當熟練)。它們的副詞一般都用 masterfully:The young boy played Beethoven’s fifth piano sonata masterfully. (這位男孩熟練地演奏貝多芬第五鋼琴奏鳴曲)。

Leave, let, leave (me) alone, let (me) alone

Leave 和 let 有個意思是重疊的,即「讓;允許」,但這往往造成一項用法問題:
leave me alone 和 let me alone 都是正規英語,兩者均意為「別打擾我」或「走開,我想要一個人靜一靜」。let + 代名詞 + 不帶 to 的不定詞 (即原形動詞) 是正規用法,如 Let me go. (讓我走吧);Let them find us. (讓他們來找我們)。但 leave 在此結構中則是非正規用法,所以像 Leave me go. 和 Leave them find us. 這樣的句子通常僅用在幽默場合。然而,如果 leave 後面使用帶 to 的不定詞,那麼這結構就是正規英語,不過意思略有不同:Leave me to go. (離我而去);Leave them to find us. (交由他們來找我們)。

Leave sb to do sth 意為「留給或交給 (某人) 去做 (某事);留下 (某人) 繼續做某事」:I’ll leave you to buy the tickets. (我將把買票的事交給你辦);I’ll leave you to get on with your book. (我會讓你繼續看你的書)。這個句型還有一些變化,如 leave sth to sb 或 leave sb to sth:Don’t worry, just leave everything to me. (別擔心,就把一切交給我好了);I’ll leave you to your crossword puzzle. (我會讓你留下繼續做你的填字遊戲)。所以,I’ll leave you to buy the tickets. 可改為 I’ll leave it to you to buy the tickets. (句中的 it = to buy the tickets) 或 I’ll leave buying the tickets to you. — 最後這一句是將不定詞片語改為動名詞片語,放在 leave 後面當受詞,符合 leave sth to sb 的句型。

最後要提的是,let me alone 意為「別打擾我」,但 let alone 的意思卻是「遑論:更不用說 (用來表示接著提到的事情更不可能)」,兩者不可混淆,如 The baby can’t even walk, let alone run. (這嬰兒連路都不會走,更談不上跑了) — let alone 和主句之間要用逗點隔開。至於 leave alone,一般都以 leave sb/sth alone 的型態出現,因此意思並無變化,但 leave sth alone 意為「任其自然不予理會;不去動它」:Leave that ornament alone; you might break it. (別動那件裝飾品;你可能會弄壞它)。

Identify

除了「認出;辨認;確認;指認」的意思外,identify 還意為「認為與 (某人) 有關連;(在思想或感情上) 認同 (某人);理解並同情 (某人) 的感受,感同身受」,如 Most young readers identified (or identified themselves) with the heroine of the novel.

Reading the book, I find it hard to identify (or identify myself) with the main character/with the main character’s struggle. (閱讀這本書,我發現自己難以跟書中主人公有同感 [認同主人公的鬥爭])。至於意為「認出;辨認;確認;指認」的及物動詞用法,這動詞也是正規英語:He identified the dead woman as his wife. (他認出死者是他的太太);He identified the wallet as his. (他認出那個錢包是他的) — 注意這項意思的 identify 經常與介系詞 as 連用。

Fit (adj., n., v.)

Fit 的動詞三態為 fit, fitted/fit, fitted/fit:He fitted [fit] the children with shoes. (他給小孩試鞋子的大小);His jeans fit [fitted] him like a glove. (他的牛仔褲非常合身) — fit (someone) like a glove 為一常用成語,意為「非常合身」。在英式英語中,fit 的過去式和過去分詞通常為 fitted,但當 fit 意為「使合…身;安裝;使勝任」時,其過去式和過去分詞永遠是 fitted。所以,必須注意的是,在所有的意思中,fit 和 fitted 並非都可互換,尤其是分詞形容詞的意思:He was fit for the work again. (他可以再工作了 — 因為他身體已經健康或強健);She was fitted for the task. (她適合這項工作或她能勝任這項工作 — 因為她訓練良好或學有專精)。在這兩句中,fit for 和 fitted for 都可改為不定詞型態,即 fit to work again 和 fitted to do the task。

此外,我們也要注意 fit 和 fitted 放在名詞之前當定語形容詞 (attributive adjectives) 的意思:He’s not a fit person to handle money. (他不是處理金錢的合適人選 — 因為他有道德上的問題,可能會A錢) — 在此 fit 意為「適合的;恰當的」;I bought a fitted shirt. (我買了一件訂製的襯衫) — 在此 fitted 意為「訂做的」。最後要注意的是,當形容詞用、意為「健康的;強健的」的 fit 只有 “fit” 這個型態,不能寫成 fitted。而與這些形容詞和動詞相關的名詞也是 “fit”,意為「適合;合身」,如 The shoes are just your fit. (這雙鞋正好合你的腳);This dress is a beautiful fit. (這件衣服合身極了);This garment is a tight fit. (這件衣服很貼身)。

Fit 還有另一個意思與上述完全不同的名詞用法,其字面意思為「(疾病的) (一陣) 發作」(a seizure, an attack),如 He had a fit of coughing. (他咳嗽了一陣),而比喻意思為「(感情、情緒等的) 突發」,如 Everyone collapsed in fits of laughter. (大家爆出陣陣大笑)。這個字還意為「一時的衝動 (而做出有力的動作)」:We had a fit of housecleaning that lasted for nearly a week. (我們一時興起持續進行了近一個禮拜的大掃除)。最後值得一提的是,這個 fit 構成了若干常見的成語,如 by/in fits and starts、to have/throw a fit 等等。by/in fits and starts 意為「一陣一陣地;時斷時續地;間歇地」,為正規英語,而 to have/throw a fit 意為「勃然大怒;大發脾氣」,僅用在口語和非正式場合。
