Connect the dots, join the dots

Connect the dots 為美式英語,而 join (up) the dots 為英式英語。

One man’s meat is another man’s poison (phr.)

說明:One man’s meat is another man’s poison 已知第一個紀錄此諺語的人是英國作曲家湯瑪斯‧維托 (Thomas Whythorne),他於大約 1576 年在他的自傳中寫到:”Þat which iz on bodies meat iz an oþerz poison. (That which is one bodies meat is others poison.)”。

  • Tom: What do you mean you don’t like stinky tofu? They’re the best food in the world!
Sam: One man’s meat is another man’s poison.
  • Simon loves to travel to remote areas but that’s not for Allen – one man’s meat.

Zero tolerance

Call on the carpet

To call on the carpet 意為「被責備,被訓斥」,是個美國慣用語,源自 1700 年代初期流行的成語 on the carpet。

To call on the carpet 和 to be on the carpet 現在都意為「被責備,被訓斥」,而 to call someone on the carpet 則意為「責備某人,訓斥某人」。

  • I’ve never been to New York, but I hope to visit it next year.
  • I’ve never gone to New York, but I hope to visit it next year.

解說:Been (be 的過去分詞) to 意為「去…
