crummy

  • The service at that internet cafe is crummy.
  • That’s a crummy school.

Q:John is a fun person. 和 John is a funny person.

  • A comedian is funny.
  • Going to an amusement park is fun.

  • John is a fun person.
  • John is a funny person.

  • Going to a dentist is not fun!
  • Nobody laughed because his joke was not funny.
  • The movie was quite funny.
  • Playing basketball is fun.
  • Playing a game is fun/funny.
  • He’s one of Taiwan’s funniest comedians.
  • A party with your friends is fun.

事實上,fun 的用法很特殊,其句型有二:「事 + is/was/are/were (a lot of/lots of/much) fun (某事很好玩)」及「人 + have/has/had (a lot of/lots of/great/good) fun. 由此可知,英文並無 It has fun.

  • I had lots of fun at the party last night.
  • The party last night was a lot of fun.
  • We hope you have fun at the beach tomorrow!
  • We had great fun comparing the functions of our smartphones.
  • Do come tomorrow, it’ll be good fun.
  • Spending money is fun!

  • Anthony is great/good fun.
  • You’ll love Peter – he’s great/good fun.

請注意這裡的 great/good fun (很有趣的人) 與上面 great/good fun (玩得很愉快) 的不同;兩者構詞一樣,而且主詞都是人,但動詞一個是 BE 動詞、一個是 have/has/had。

Q:Fewer/Less than 200 people went to the party.

A:Fewer 和 Less 分別為 few 和 little 的比較級,few 後接複數可數名詞,little 後接不可數名詞。

  • Allen has few friends in Tokyo, does he?
  • Allen has a few friends in Tokyo, doesn’t he?
  • Mary got little help from John, did she?
  • Mary got a little help from John, didn’t she?

  • Sam ate little, so I urged him to eat a little more.
  • I had fewer books than he did.
  • I drank less coffee than she did.
  • Eat less or you’re getting fatter and fatter.

  • Cars made in Korea are fewer than those made in Japan.
  • He worked fewer hours than I did.

  • Less than 200 people went to the party.
= Fewer people than 200 went to the party.
  • Fewer than 200 people went to the party.

Research shows fewer than 100 women worldwide have fallen pregnant with twins in separate wombs.

  • There shall be no fewer than three guards on duty.
  • No fewer than 50 celebrities went to the concert.
  • The stadium holds no fewer than 100,000 people.

mondo

(形容詞) 多的,許多的 (many or much)。

  • I used mondo hairspray this morning.

  • That house is mondo expensive.
  • That test was mondo hard.
