Leave, let, leave (me) alone, let (me) alone

let + 代名詞 + 不帶 to 的不定詞 (即原形動詞) 是正規用法,如 Let me go. (讓我走吧);Let them find us. 和 Leave them find us. (離我而去);Leave them to find us.

Leave sb to do sth I’ll leave you to buy the tickets. (我將把買票的事交給你辦);I’ll leave you to get on with your book. 這個句型還有一些變化,如 leave sth to sb 或 leave sb to sth:Don’t worry, just leave everything to me. (別擔心,就把一切交給我好了);I’ll leave you to your crossword puzzle. I’ll leave you to buy the tickets. I’ll leave it to you to buy the tickets. (句中的 it = to buy the tickets) 或 I’ll leave buying the tickets to you.

The baby can’t even walk, let alone run. Leave that ornament alone; you might break it.

Fit (adj., n., v.)

Fit 的動詞三態為 fit, fitted/fit, fitted/fit:He fitted [fit] the children with shoes. (他給小孩試鞋子的大小);His jeans fit [fitted] him like a glove. He was fit for the work again. (他可以再工作了 — 因為他身體已經健康或強健);She was fitted for the task. 在這兩句中,fit for 和 fitted for 都可改為不定詞型態,即 fit to work again 和 fitted to do the task。

He’s not a fit person to handle money. I bought a fitted shirt. The shoes are just your fit. (這雙鞋正好合你的腳);This dress is a beautiful fit. (這件衣服合身極了);This garment is a tight fit.

He had a fit of coughing. Everyone collapsed in fits of laughter. 這個字還意為「一時的衝動 (而做出有力的動作)」:We had a fit of housecleaning that lasted for nearly a week. 最後值得一提的是,這個 fit 構成了若干常見的成語,如 by/in fits and starts、to have/throw a fit 等等。by/in fits and starts 意為「一陣一陣地;時斷時續地;間歇地」,為正規英語,而 to have/throw a fit 意為「勃然大怒;大發脾氣」,僅用在口語和非正式場合。

Chance, opportunity

Chance 當名詞用時可跟介系詞 at, for, of 和 on 連用:Mary has a chance at winning. (瑪麗有獲勝的機會);The meetings are very short, so there is little chance for real discussion. (會議都很短,所以沒有什麼機會進行真正的討論);For the first time in 15 years, they have a realistic chance of winning an election. (15 年來,他們首次有了贏得選舉的實際可能);I’ll take a chance on entering. (我將冒險進入) – to take a chance (on) = to take chances,意為「冒險;碰運氣」,如 It is just not worth taking any chances. Participants are given/offered/provided the chance to learn another language.

chance 可接on/upon, by 和 into 等介系詞,但以 chance on/upon 最常見,意為「偶然發現;巧遇」,如:I was browsing in a bookshop when I chanced upon an old friend. I chanced to meet an old friend in the park today.

The program gives students the opportunity to learn more about global warming. opportunity 亦常與介系詞 for 和 of 連用 (for 和 of 後面接動名詞、名詞和名詞片語):The job pays well, but there’s not much opportunity for career advancement. (這份工作報酬不錯,但卻沒有多少職業升遷的機會);Soon he had an opportunity of explaining that to her.

I’ll have a chance/an opportunity to visit the Louvre when I’m in Paris. (我到了巴黎將有機會參觀羅浮宮);然而,chance 還有「可能性」的意思,這是 opportunity 所沒有的,因此在表示這意思時,我們只能用 chance 而不能用 opportunity,如 There is a chance (不可用 opportunity) that I’ll see him.

Decline (v.)

如果某人要給你某樣東西,你可以婉拒該項提供 (to decline the offer),或者如果有人請你做某事,你也可以拒絕去做 (to decline to do something)。但你絕不能說你婉拒汽車或房子的貸款 (to decline the loan) 或婉拒借款 (to decline the lending or borrowing)。 We asked her to the reception, but she declined the invitation. She declined to have lunch with her friend, saying that she wasn’t feeling well.

Want / want for / want down, want in, want into, want off, want out, want up / want that

He wants you to see him in Taipei without fail. This deck of cards wants a nine of clubs. (這副牌缺了一張梅花9);3.「應該」(ought to or should):You want to tell him the truth.

我們知道,當 want 意為「要,想要」時,它的後面是緊接著不定詞結構,而不是接 for:I want you to go. I want for you to go.。然而,當 want 和不定詞在句中被分開時,這時候就要使用 for:What I want is for you to go. (我想要的是你去);I want very much for you to go. 當意為「缺乏,缺少」時,它通常接 for:They’ll not want for anything now that they’ve inherited his estate.

Want down, want in, want into, want off, want out, want up Could you hold on a moment? The kid wants down [up]. 孩子想要下來/上來);The cat’s at the back door and wants in [out]. (貓在後門想要進來/出去);She wants into Cambridge University. (她想上劍橋大學);He accepted the appointment just last month, but now he wants out. (他上個月甫接受這項職位,但現在卻想掛冠求去);She wants off at the next stop. 正規英語都會在 want 後面加上不定詞再加介系詞而不會僅單獨使用 down, in, into, off, out, up (即 wants to come in, wants to get down, into, out, off, up),但不少人卻仍經常在輕鬆的場合不經意地使用這些片語。

She wants that you should come upstairs. She wants you to come upstairs.。

Exception

With the exception of John, everyone passed the exam. (除約翰外,每個人都通過了考試);I took the greatest exception to his rude remarks.

With the exception of 意為「除… Everyone was in favor, with the sole exception of the governor.

Justify, explain, account for

Her actions were justified by subsequent events. He was justified in calling the police. (他報警是正確的),Is he justified in his criticism?

Justify 後面接 by 或 in 都是標準英語;同樣地,它的後面若接 (1) as,(2) to – 後接不定詞或名詞,(3) because of 和 for 以及 (4) on/upon (the) grounds of

(1) I thought it was justified as a stopgap measure.
(2) We felt we were justified to cancel the meeting. She tried to justify her behavior to anyone who would listen.
(3) Our departure was justified because of [for] their obvious interference.
(4) He justified his decision on/upon] [the] grounds of the need for haste.

I will explain the directive I gave my assistants, but I need not justify it to them.

Account for 意為「解釋說明」,既有 explain 亦有 justify 的意思,所以 to account for the accuracy of something 包含對該事的解釋或證明它的正確性的意思。

To work hard is necessary.;Mary is a good girl.;The dog is very big. These girls are my students.;They have lived here for five years.

The committee has its own regulations. The committee have their own duties. 例如:(英式英語) The government have decided to issue consumption vouchers. (政府已決定發放消費券),Manchester United are ahead, three to nil. (曼徹斯特聯合隊現在以 3 比 0 領先);(美式英語) The government has decided to issue consumption vouchers.,Manchester United is ahead, three to nil.。

此外,My admiration and love for her is without limit. Everybody has their own freedom of speech.
