Plan

當名詞用時,plan 經常與 abandon, cancel, devise, formulate, implement, make, oppose, outline, scrap, shelve, unveil, work out 等動詞搭配使用,如 devise/formulate/make/outline/work out a plan (擬定或制訂計畫或方案),scrap our plans (放棄我們的計畫),shelve a plan (擱置計畫)等等。然而,我們經常使用且大多數字典都有列出的幾個片語,如 to make plans for the future, to do future planning 和 to have future plans (意思都是「為未來做計畫或規劃,擬定未來的計畫」),均被批評為贅字;同樣地,advance/advanced planning (事先的計畫),to plan in advance 或 to plan ahead (提前計畫;事先計畫),亦被視為累贅。

plan on (doing) something 意為「打算 (做某事);預料 (某事會發生)」;plan to do something意為「打算 (做某事)」:I am planning on going to Australia this year. (我打算今年去澳洲);We hadn’t planned on so many people coming. (我們沒有料到會來這麼多人);My father is planning to retire at 55.

我們經常聽到「A計畫」、「B計畫」這樣的講法,即 Plan A 和 Plan B。

Plead

His lawyer advised him to plead not guilty [guilty]. 我們經常會在電影中聽到這樣的對話:(法官) “How do you plead?” / 被告,你認不認罪?),(被告) “I plead not guilty.”

He pleaded insanity in the hope of getting a shorter sentence.

The defendant pled [not] guilty.”

lived (adj.)

These roses are very long-lived. Her reputation was long-lived and richly deserved.

None the + 比較級 + for + 名詞/because + 子句 (或 because of + 名詞);(all) the + 比較級 + for + 名詞/because + 子句 (或 because of + 名詞)

He spent two weeks in hospital but he’s none the better for it. (他的病情未因在醫院住了兩星期而有所好轉);He explained it to me, but I’m none the wiser. = He explained it to me, but I still don’t understand it. (他對我做了解釋,但我仍然不懂);My car is none the worse for the accident. = My car is not worse because of the accident. (我的車子沒因那次車禍而變得更糟糕);The country will be all the worse for that event.

She loves you none the less for your faults.
= She loves you none the less because you have faults.
= She does not love you the less because you have faults.
(注意:當 because 前面有 not 時,這個 not 是否定 because,即 not because,不是否定主動詞 love)
= Though you have faults, she loves you none the less.
= You have faults, but she loves you none the less.
= You have faults; nevertheless/nonetheless she loves you.

They became all the better friends for a misunderstanding.
= They became all the better friends because there was a misunderstanding.
= As there was a misunderstanding, they became (all) the better friends.
= There was a misunderstanding, so they became the better friends.

Exception

With the exception of John, everyone passed the exam. (除約翰外,每個人都通過了考試);I took the greatest exception to his rude remarks.

With the exception of 意為「除… Everyone was in favor, with the sole exception of the governor.

-ce, -cy / dependence, dependency

Those three small islands are dependencies of Japan. We need to reduce our dependence on oil as a source of energy. (我們必須減少仰賴石油做為能源);It is very hard to get rid of his dependency on the drug.

Dead center, dead on the target, dead reckoning, dead right

Dead center 意為「正中心」,即絕對精確的中心點,如 to aim for the dead center (瞄準正中心) – 這裡 dead 是形容詞修飾語。 His shot was dead on the target. (他射得正中目標),His criticism on my mistakes is dead on the target. (他對我的錯誤提出批評,真是一針見血);dead ahead (正前方)。

Dead right 意為「絕對正確;完全正確」,對得無以復加,就像死亡一樣不能逆轉:You’re dead right.

有些人可能不知道 dead 除了當形容詞和副詞外還可當名詞用,如 in the dead of night (深夜),in the dead of winter (隆冬)。這裡 dead (或 in the dead of) 意為「最寂靜的時候;最冷清的時刻」。

Especially, also

*Especially men have this problem.
Men, especially, have this problem.

*Also men have this problem.
Men also have this problem.

Also, most women would agree.
= Furthermore, most women would agree.

Awhile, a while

It took a while to get down the hill. (下山需要一點時間),句中 a while 與其他名詞片語如 an hour 或 a long time 的作用一樣。 It took awhile to get down the hill.,句中 awhile 與副詞片語 quite long 或比較級副詞 longer 的作用一樣。

I’ll stay for a while. I’ll stay for awhile.。 I’ll stay a while. 或 I’ll stay awhile. I’m waiting for him/the bus. Let’s wait (for) a while.

Incoming, oncoming, upcoming, ongoing, outgoing

Here is the incoming email. (這是收到的電子郵件);the incoming president (新任總統)。

We watched the oncoming train. (我們注視著駛近的火車);the oncoming spring (即將到來的春天);We faced the oncoming traffic. upcoming 也意為「即將來臨 (發生、出現) 的」(= forthcoming):There is a carnival upcoming in July. (7月即將有一場嘉年華會);The upcoming meetings will be important. (即將舉行的會議都至關重要);the upcoming elections (即將舉行的選舉)。

outgoing 意為「即將外出 (離去、出發) 的;即將離職 (卸任) 的;直率的,(性格) 外向的」:the outgoing email (外寄的電子郵件);the outgoing chancellor (即將卸任的首相);an outgoing personality (外向的性格)。
