Till the cows come home

Till/Until the cows come home 意為「長時間地;很久」(for a very long time)。

  • They could sit here and argue till the cows come home, but it wouldn’t solve anything.
  • My husband was talking on the phone with his brother till the cows came home last night.
  • You can talk till the cows come home, but you’ll never persuade me to lend you the money!
  • You can wait until the cows come home, but you’ll never see these measures taken in this company!

Speak for yourself

  • A: We just love traveling.
    B: Speak for yourself. I think it’s exhausting. (B:
  • Paul: The writing course is really boring.

第三人稱單數為 bills and coos、過去式和過去分詞為 billed and cooed,而現在分詞或動名詞為 billing and cooing。

Muddy the waters

Many industrial activities have muddied the river.

It’s not rocket science

It’s not rocket science It doesn’t take a rocket scientist

這個慣用語最初的用法是 ships that pass in the night,係直接摘錄自美國詩人亨利‧華茲華斯‧朗費羅 (Henry Wadsworth Longfellow) 1863 年出版的詩集《路畔旅舍故事》(Tales of a Wayside Inn)。Ships that pass in the night 一度是比較流行的用法,但現今 ships passing in the night 則較之常用許多。
