Age

Age

  • Robert looks a lot older but he is actually the same age as me.
  • The average age of the students was under 20.

At the age of

  • His daughter started to learn the piano at the age of four.
  • The two brothers became professional tennis players at the ages of twenty-four and twenty-seven.

At the age of 為固定用語,所以在指人的年齡時不可使用 in the age of。例如:

-ish, -y

  • A: How old do you think our manager is?
    B: Fortyish. Possibly younger. (B:
  • I’ll call you at sevenish and then we can discuss that matter.

  • A: Is he tall, Amy’s new boyfriend?
    B: Well, tallish. (B:
  • A: Is it far from the shopping mall?
B: No, but it’s near the MRT station, well, nearish to the MRT station. (B:

  • What color tie do you think goes with this shirt? The blue one? Or should it be the greeny one?

Long 的用法

  • How long have you been here in Taipei?
  • Will you be long, or shall I wait? - “Be/take long” 意為「要很久;要很長的時間」。
  • Don’t be long getting ready, please.
  • I hope you haven’t been waiting long.
  • John didn’t stay long in the library.

我們通常使用 (for) a long time。例如:

Cos, cos of

它可用來取代 because,而 cos of 則可取代 because of。

Cos 和 cos of 的用法與 because 和 because of 一樣。

  • Mary is absent cos she is ill.
  • Cos he was so tired, he went to bed at 8 pm.
  • John cannot go to work cos of sickness.
  • Because of the storm I canceled the business trip to Taipei.
= Because of the storm, I canceled the business trip to Taipei.
= I canceled the business trip to Taipei because of the storm.
= I canceled the business trip to Taipei cos of the storm.

Reason 的用法

Reason for

  • I don’t know the reason for her bad mood.
I don’t know the reason of her bad mood.
  • There were several reasons for his cruelty to animals.
There were several reasons of his cruelty to animals.
  • Could you tell me your reason(s) for marrying such an ugly woman?
Could you tell me your reason(s) of marrying such an ugly woman?

  • Eugene knows hardly anybody.
  • He hardly knows anybody.
  • Only Justin drinks coffee.
  • Justin drinks only coffee.

以外)、judging by/from (根據…
