  • Mary left without even apologizing.
  • Some people never even read a newspaper, let alone a book.

  • It’s a really useful website if you’re interested in online games. There’s even a section on walkthroughs and cheats.

  • Everyone likes money – even a five-year-old does.
  • Even the dog refused to eat it.
  • John never stopped working, not even on New Year’s Eve/New Year’s Day.
  • Don’t tell anyone, not even your husband.

I suggest that you apologize to your teacher for coming to school late.
It is suggested that you make an apology to your teacher for coming to school late.
We would like to donate a large number of books to the library.
There are a large number of books to donate to the library.

A lot 和 lots 用作代名詞或名詞時,意思相當於 much 和 many,而 lots 又比 a lot 更加非正式。

Plenty 當代名詞用時意為「足夠 (enough);夠多 (more than enough)」。例如:

  • That’s plenty.
  • 500 US dollars will be plenty. (500
  • A: How long will it take?
B: Two hours should be plenty. (B:

A lot、lots 和 plenty 後面須有 of 才能接名詞;a lot of 和 lots of 意為「很多的」,而 plenty of 意為「很多的;充裕的;足夠的」。

  • A lot of people don’t like the plan much.
  • Mary eats a lot of fruit.
  • He has lots of relatives.
  • He earned lots of money last year.
  • The students have plenty of ideas.
  • They’ve always had plenty of money.
  • Don’t hurry! We have plenty of time.
Don’t hurry! We have plenty time.

  • How many sisters do you have?
  • I don’t have many relatives.

  • Not many students (or Few students) like exams.
  • Not many people (or Few people) came to the meeting.

  • There are a lot of books on the desk.
  • There are many books on the desk.

然而,在正式的上下文中,我們有時可以在肯定句中使用 many 或 many of (many 在此為代名詞) 來代替 a lot of 或 lots of。例如:

  • Many teachers are strongly opposed to the pension reform.
  • Many of his students have become public servants.

More or less

  • I’ve more or less finished reading the novel.
  • His youngest son was more or less mentally retarded.
  • The plan was more or less a success.

More or less

  • His mother’s about 40.
  • His mother’s more or less 40.

Bring、take 和 fetch 的用法

  • Bring your guitar when you come to visit me.
  • I’ll bring my guitar to your house tonight.
  • Can I bring my sister with me tonight?
  • Tony visited us and brought his sister with him.
Tony visited us and took his sister with him.
  • Please don’t forget to bring your grammar books next time.
  • Can you bring me my grammar book I left on your desk the other day?
Can you take me my grammar book I left on your desk the other day?
  • A: Shall I bring anything to your birthday party?
    B: Oh, just a bottle. (B:

The thing, the one/only/first thing, something

The thing

  • The thing I love about John is his loyalty to his wife.
= What I love about John is his loyalty to his wife.

  • The thing I like most about Penghu is the historic sites.
= What I like most about Penghu is the historic sites.

  • The thing you need to remember is that you’ve lent James 50,000 dollars.
= What you need to remember is that you’ve lent James 50,000 dollars. (正)
  • The thing you need to remember is you’ve lent James 50,000 dollars.

  • I gave my daughter an iPhone 7.
  • I gave an iPhone 7 to my daughter.

  • For his wife, he bought a Mercedes Benz.

  • After graduation Allen is going to study abroad.
  • We’re planning to meet at half after ten.
  • After you, please.
  • After you with the computer, please.
  • Mary came in after John.
  • Paul slammed the door after him.

Prefer

  • Do you prefer summer or winter?
  • He prefers his daughter to live near him.
  • Do you prefer to exercise indoors or outdoors?
  • She prefers living in Kaohsiung.
  • I prefer white wine to red.
  • A lot of people prefer the quiet countryside to the noisy cities.
  • Most people prefer watching television to reading books.
