Allusive, elusive, illusive, illusory (adjs.)

allusive 意為「間接提及的,暗示的,暗指的;引經據典的,有典故的,引喻的」(characterized by implied or indirect references),如 a remark allusive to his misconduct (暗指他行為不檢的談話);allusive English idioms (有典故的英文成語)。elusive 意為「逃避的,規避的;難抓住的;難找的;難記的」(evasive, hard to grasp or catch, baffling),如 We found him rather elusive: He never seemed to be at home. illusive 和 illusory 是同義詞,意為「欺騙的;迷惑人的;虛假的;虛幻的;幻覺的;錯覺的;引起錯覺的」(deceptive, unreal, based on an illusion),但 illusory 的使用頻率比 illusive 高出許多,如 an illusory image (假象);an illusory belief (迷惑人的信仰)。

The president made several allusions to the previous government’s failures. The sun appears to go around the earth, but this is an illusion.

He suffers from delusions of grandeur. 再者,這兩個字分別所構成的一個結構相似的常用片語,”be under the illusion (+ that子句)” (有錯覺;誤以為) 和 “be under the delusion (+ that子句)” (妄想),也維持這項區別,如 They were under the illusion that the company was doing well, but in fact it was in serious trouble. (他們誤以為該公司營運很好,但實際上它陷於嚴重困境中);She has always been under the delusion that she is a great singer.

Proportional, proportionable, proportionate (adjs.)

The sentence is not proportional to the crime. (量刑與罪行不相稱);The payment he will have to make will be proportional to the damage he has done. (他需要付的錢是根據他所造成的損失大小而定);Wages will rise at a rate proportionate to the amount of work you do. (工資將與你所做的工作量成比例增加);You will have to work an extra three days, but there will be a proportionable increase in your pay.

Accumulative, cumulative (adjs.)

He has accumulative drives for fame and money. (他對名利的慾望與日俱增);We live in an accumulative society. Her accumulative energies are unflagging; she is one of the great collectors.

Cumulative 通常沒有貶抑的含意,如 the cumulative total (累計總額;累積總數); a cumulative effect (累積效應;蓄積作用);At the end of October, the cumulative total (number) of reported H1N1 cases was more than 100. (在10月底,已呈報的新流感個案已累積至逾 100 件);He believes the ad campaign will eventually be successful and will have a positive cumulative effect on sales volume. a cumulative effect 亦可寫成 an accumulative effect,但後者相當少用。

Q:許多人經常使用的 free of charge 中的 “(of) charge” 是不是贅字?

既然我們可以說 (someone is) free of responsibility (免除責任),free of blame (免受責備),為何不能說某樣東西是 free of charge 呢?

事實上,free 和 free of charge 只是英文表示「免費」的用字或用語中的兩個而已,其他還有 for free, for nothing, gratis, without cost, without charge, without payment。

  • She got her new book for nothing [for free, free, free of charge, gratis, without charge, without cost, without payment].

Transport (n., v.), transportation (n.)

The transport/transportation of goods by air is very expensive. (貨物空運是很昂貴的);Taipei’s public transport/transportation system is among the finest in the world. (台北的大眾運輸系統是世界一流的);The railway/railroad gives free transport/transportation for a certain amount of luggage/baggage. (鐵路免費運送一定數量的行李);What will we do for transport/transportation to and from the airport?

The sentence was transportation to Australia. transport 還意為「(軍用) 運輸機,運輸船」,而這意思是 transportation 所沒有的;再者,transport 另有一個意思也是 transportation 所沒有的,那就是「激情,狂喜」,大多用在正式文件和文學作品中,如 a transport of delight/joy/rapture (欣喜若狂);My sister was in a transport of delight/joy/rapture at the good news.

Trucks transport the steel to the ports. (卡車把鋼材運到港口);A shuttle bus transports all employees from their homes. (有一輛交通車接送員工上班);British prisoners used to be transported to Australia. (從前英國的囚犯常被流放到澳洲);Sarah was transported with joy by the good news.

Homogeneous, homogenous (adjs.)

It was a homogeneous/homogenous community, its members holding remarkably similar values. (那是個同質的社區,因為其成員的價值觀極為相似);The unemployed are not a homogeneous/homogenous group. (失業者並非同質的群體);homogeneous/homogenous mixture (均勻的混合物)。

These animals are homogenous, as their similar physiology makes clear.

Precipitate, precipitous (adjs.), precipitately, precipitously (advs.)

The President made a rather precipitate departure. (總統相當倉促地離開了);They acted with precipitate haste. (他們魯莽倉促地採取行動);precipitate action (魯莽/輕率的舉動)。 A precipitous path led down the cliff. (懸崖往下有一條陡峭的小路);She did not dare to bike down the precipitous slope. (她不敢騎著腳踏車衝下陡峭的斜坡);a precipitous drop in commodity prices (商品價格急劇滑落);a precipitous decline in population (人口驟降)。

Their precipitous entry into the foreign markets ended in disaster.

Such headaches can be precipitated by food as well as stress. (這類頭痛會因為食物和壓力而猝發);Fears about the solvency of the banks precipitated the great economic crash. (對銀行償付能力的擔憂更加速了經濟的崩潰);The car overturned and precipitated us into the ditch. (車子翻了,我們被摔進了溝裡);The company was precipitated into ruin when the exchange rate dropped. (匯率下降時,公司一下子破產倒閉了);The border incident precipitated the two countries into war.

Foreword, preface, introduction (nn.)

Table of contents (目錄)
Foreword (by another person)
Editor’s preface
Author’s preface
Acknowledgements
Introduction

Comic (adj., n.), comical (adj.)

(這齣戲裡有一些搞笑的片段);The students gave a comic performance. (學生做了滑稽表演);Her comic songs did not raise a smile. (她的滑稽歌曲未使人發笑);The teacher wore a comical hat. (老師戴了一頂滑稽可笑的帽子);It was quite comical to see him sit there quietly. (看他靜靜地坐在那裡頗為好笑);a comical act (滑稽可笑的行為)。

He is a comic actor/writer.

I’ve read many comics (or comic books). His father is one of the world’s best-known comics (or comedians).

Q:由於 compare 也可當名詞用,有些字典甚至把它的英文註釋寫成 comparison,那麼請問是否可以將 There is no comparison… There is no compare…?

A:不可以! The service is beyond/without/past compare.

所以,There is no comparison 不能寫成 There is no compare,何況前者還是個慣用語,意為「不能相提並論」,如 There’s no comparison between frozen and fresh fish. (冷凍魚與新鮮魚沒法比);I never loved her the way I love you; there’s no comparison.
